Summary

Product identification

The FilmTec™ BW30-400 is a high rejection, high surface area brackish water reverse osmosis (RO) element. It is a spiral-wound element featuring a polyamide thin-film composite membrane. It was the first 400 square foot membrane element on the market.

Key features:

  • DuPont’s automated manufacturing technology ensures consistent performance.
  • Delivers high flow and high rejection.
  • Not chlorinated during the manufacturing process, contributing to durability and a wider cleaning pH range.

Operating limits

  • Membrane Type: Polyamide Thin-Film Composite
  • Maximum Operating Temperature: 113°F (45°C)
    • Maximum temperature for continuous operation above pH 10 is 95°F (35°C).
  • Maximum Operating Pressure: 600 psig (41 bar)
  • Maximum Pressure Drop (per element): 15 psig (1.0 bar)
  • pH Range (Continuous Operation): 2 - 11
  • pH Range (Short-Term Cleaning, 30 min.): 1 - 13
  • Maximum Feed Flow: 70 gpm (15.9 m³/hr)
  • Maximum Feed Silt Density Index: SDI 5
  • Free Chlorine Tolerance: < 0.1 ppm
    • Oxidation damage from free chlorine is not covered under warranty; pretreatment to remove residual free chlorine is recommended.
  • Maximum pressure drop across an entire pressure vessel (housing) is 50 psi (3.4 bar).

Product water

The following typical properties are based on standard conditions: 2,000 ppm NaCl, 225 psi (15.5 bar), 77°F (25°C), pH 8 and 15% recovery.

  • Permeate flow rate: 10,500 gpd (40 m³/d)
    • Flow rates for individual elements may vary but will be no more than 15% below the value shown.
  • Stabilized salt rejection: 99.5%
  • Minimum salt rejection: 99.0%

Mechanical / hydraulic

  • Active area: 400 ft² (37 m²)
    • Active area is guaranteed +/-3%.
  • Feed spacer thickness: 28 mil
  • Element dimensions:
    • A: 40.0 inches (1,016 mm)
    • B (ID): 1.125 inches (29 mm)
    • C: 7.9 inches (201 mm)
  • Designed to fit a nominal 8.0-inch (203 mm) I.D. pressure vessel.

General

  • Proper start-up procedures are essential to prepare membranes for service and prevent damage.
  • During start-up, gradual changes are recommended: feed pressure increased over 30-60 seconds, cross-flow velocity achieved over 15-20 seconds.
  • Elements must be kept moist at all times after initial wetting.
  • For prolonged system shutdowns, immersion in a preservative solution is recommended to prevent biological growth.
  • The customer is responsible for the effects of incompatible chemicals and lubricants.
  • Avoid static permeate-side backpressure at all times.
  • Permeate obtained from the first hour of operation should be discarded.
  • The use of this product does not guarantee the removal of cysts and pathogens; effective reduction depends on complete system design, operation, and maintenance.
