Testing conditions for RO models: 2,000 ppm NaCl solution at 225 psig (1,550 kPa) operating pressure, 25°C (77°F), pH 7.5, and 15% recovery, before any hot water sanitization. Average salt rejection is measured after 24 hours of operation. Individual flow rate may vary +/-20%. Final permeate flow rate is subject to variations in heat treatments, often stabilizing at 25% below nominal flow rate for Duratherm STD RO after heat treatment.

Feed Water

Feedwater should meet:

  • NTU < 1
  • SDI₁₅ < 5

Hot Water Sanitization Recommendations

  • Prior to first use, new elements should be flushed with clean water (RO permeate preferred) for at least an hour at a transmembrane pressure not exceeding 45 psi (3 bar). The system must operate for a minimum of 24 hours before hot water sanitization.
  • If hot water sanitization is done before first use, flush at low transmembrane pressure (up to 45 psi (3 bar)) for a minimum of 24 hours before sanitization.
  • Maintain transmembrane pressure during hot water sanitization as low as possible, not exceeding 45 psi (3 bar), while ensuring some permeate flow for effective sanitization on the permeate side.
  • Monitor and adjust crossflow so that pressure drop is not more than 2 psi per element or 10 psi per housing.
  • Sanitization Procedure:
    1. Elements that have been in operation should be cleaned using an approved Clean-In-Place (CIP) procedure to remove scales or foulants, then thoroughly flushed for at least an hour before sanitization.
    2. Increase system temperature from room temperature to the target sanitization temperature (up to 90°C/194°F) at a rate not higher than 5°C/9°F per minute. Maintain the target temperature for 30 to 60 minutes.
    3. Cool the system to room temperature at a rate not higher than 5°C/9°F per minute.
  • Note: Solubility of some inorganics, like calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate (above 45°C), decreases with increasing temperature.
