Summary
Product identification
- Product Name: RoClean L403
- Product Type: Liquid cleaner
RoClean L403 is a multicomponent, low pH cleaner formulated to remove metal foulants and calcium carbonate scale from membranes. It is effective against iron, manganese, and aluminum. The product is certified by NSF International under NSF/ANSI Standard 60 for use as an off-line cleaner in drinking water systems.
Operating limits
The cleaner is effective for systems operating on seawater, brackish water, and wastewater.
Feed water (for cleaning solution preparation)
- Reverse osmosis (RO) permeate or deionized water.
Cleaning Procedure Summary
- Fill cleaning tank with RO permeate or deionized water.
- Heat solution to the maximum acceptable temperature according to membrane manufacturer guidelines.
- Add RoClean L403 to create a 1% wt/wt solution for mild fouling or a 2% wt/wt solution for moderate to severe fouling.
- Recirculate the solution for adequate mixing.
- Run cleaning solution through each RO system stage (one at a time) for a minimum of 60 minutes at the membrane manufacturer's recommended flow rate, or use the following guidelines:
- 4-inch element diameter: 10 gpm (2.4 m³/hr) per vessel
- 8-inch element diameter: 40 gpm (9.0 m³/hr) per vessel
- For heavily fouled membranes, consider discarding up to 15% of the solution volume if it becomes discolored or turbid. A soaking period of up to 8 hours may also be beneficial.
- Monitor the pH. If the pH remains in the desired range and the solution is not turbid, it may be used for subsequent stages. If the pH rises, prepare a new batch.
- After cleaning, rinse membranes by flushing with RO permeate. The system can then be returned to service.
