Summary
Product Identification
- Product Name: AWC® UF-429
- Product Type: MF/UF High pH Chlorinated Cleaning Compound
- Description: Powder formulation containing chlorine, dispersants, surfactants, and other cleaning compounds specifically designed for use with PVDF microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes.
- Certifications: Certified by NSF to NSF/ANSI Standard 60.
Advantages
- Penetrates and removes heavy organic foulants and biological slime.
- Disperses inorganic particulates such as silts, clays, and other colloidal particles.
- Dissolves metal hydroxides from coagulants.
- Buffered to maintain target pH range even when product is accidentally overdosed.
- Compatible with most chlorine tolerant microfiltration and ultrafiltration modules.
Typical Properties
- Appearance: White granular powder
- Odor: Slight characteristic
- Solubility in water: Soluble
- pH (2% solution): 10 - 11
- Chlorine Content (1% Solution): 500 ppm available chlorine
Chemical Feeding and Control
- Cleaning Solution Preparation: Use MF/UF filtrate. Avoid using high hardness water. Prepare cleaning solution using 9–17 lbs of AWC UF-429 for every 100 gallons of water (~1–2 wt% Solution).
- Recommended Cleaning Time: A minimum total cleaning time of 3 hours is typically recommended for heavy fouling.
- Enhancing Cleaning: Heating the solution to the maximum temperature allowed by the module manufacturer will enhance cleaning results.
- Cleaning Procedure:
- Circulate cleaning solution throughout modules, filtrate valve closed, in feed direction for 30 minutes (for tubular designs).
- Alternate with a 30-minute soak.
- Reverse flow direction and recirculate for 30 more minutes.
- Repeat steps 1-3.
- pH Adjustment: If pH decreases below the target pH range of 10-11, add more AWC UF-429 to maintain the target pH throughout the cleaning process.
- Limitations: Do not exceed membrane manufacturer’s recommended exposure time to high pH cleaners, and do not exceed the membrane’s chlorine tolerance.
- Back Flushing: If permissible by the manufacturer, back flushing the cleaning solution from filtrate to feed for 15 minutes may enhance cleaning results.
- Final Step: After cleaning, modules must be flushed with MF/UF filtrate.
Safety & Handling
- Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.
- Keep containers closed.
- Wash contaminated clothes before re-use.
- Wash thoroughly after handling.
- Refer to the Safety Data Sheet for more information.
Packaging
