Application Solution Properties

  • pH: 3.0 - 3.4 (1 %, 20 °C, deionized water)
  • Conductivity: 0.285 mS/cm (1 %, 20 °C, deionized water)
  • Foam characteristics: Non-foaming, suitable for CIP-systems

Material Compatibility

Metals

  • Compatible: Aluminium, austenitic CrNi steels (quality at least DIN 1.4301 = AISI 304), tinned iron.
  • Surface losses within acceptable limits: Mild steel (St 37/2), copper and its alloys, and galvanized iron. Stability of the sanitizing solution may be impaired with these materials. Short-term exposure is possible.
  • Caution: Avoid static disinfection due to the risk of pitting corrosion, which is favored by static solutions, high chloride content, and high temperatures.

Plastics

  • Compatible (application solution): PE, PP, rigid PVC, PTFE, PVDF.
  • Higher concentrations and/or other plastic materials should be tested for suitability.

Seals

  • Suitability of seals should be tested as required due to the wide variety of types.

Toxicology

The product shows little acute toxicity (LD50 = 3.40 (2.83 - 4.08) ml/kg rat p.o.) and has little irritant effect on the skin. A 5% aqueous preparation was tolerated without reaction on hairless mice, while higher concentrations caused reactions. A 2.5% aqueous preparation was tolerated by human skin without reaction upon repeated application. Higher concentrations or prolonged contact may cause skin reactions. A 5% P3-oxonia active solution sprayed at 18 g/m³ was tolerated by experimental animals without reaction.

Ecology

P3-oxonia active is suitable as only small traces of acetic acid or its salts remain in wastewater after reaction with organic material.

Application

General Application

  • Concentration: 0.05 - 3 %
  • Temperature: 5 - 20 °C

Increased Disinfecting Efficiency / Shorter Contact Time

  • Concentration: 0.2 - 1 %
  • Temperature: 50 °C max.

Higher temperatures should generally be avoided for stabilizing reasons, as they do not improve the sterilizing effect. Application indications are assumed values based on experience and may be corrected depending on specific conditions.

Monitoring

Concentration Determination (Titration)

  • Receiving flask: 100 ml application solution
  • Titration solution: 0.1 n sodium thiosulphate solution, 0.1 n potassium permanganate solution, sulfuric acid
  • Indicator: Potassium or sodium iodide, starch solution (1 %)
  • Calculation:
    • Volume added of potassium permanganate (ml) x 17 = concentration hydrogen peroxide (mg/l = ppm)
    • Volume added of sodium thiosulphate (ml) x 38 = concentration peracetic acid (mg/l = ppm)
    • Peracetic acid content is of major importance for efficacy evaluation.

Semi-quantitative rapid determination can be performed using "Merckoquant Etherperoxid-test"-stripes (identifies 0 - 500 ppm peroxide). A 0.1% P3-oxonia active solution shows 320 ppm peroxide on this strip. A selective determination of peracetic acid up to 50 ppm can be carried out by the "Merckoquant peracetic acid-test".

Conductivity

The specific conductivity of P3-oxonia active is usually insufficient for control. For conductance control, the addition of P3-horolith LF is recommended.

Concentration Control

Dosage can be volume-proportional to water flow for CIP-systems or cyclic for continuous systems. P3-Elados EMP-diaphragm pumps are recommended for metering, and inductive conductivity units (e.g., P3-LMIT 08) for control and phase separation of the application solution.

Safety

Relevant hazard identifications are provided in the EC Safety Data Sheet.
