Summary

Product identification

The BEKAERT Model SL8040Xa Pressure Vessel is designed for continuous use as housing for membrane filtration elements to purify seawater. It accommodates any make of eight-inch nominal diameter spiral-wound element, as well as many hollow fibre elements. The element interface hardware for the specified element is supplied with the vessel.

The Model SL8040Xa is designed to meet the standards of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section X. Vessels can be inspected during fabrication by an ASME Authorized Inspector and Code stamped at an additional cost.

The model numbering system is structured as follows: AA XX XX X a

  1. AA: Model of the Vessel (OI, SL, BK)
  2. XX: Diameter of the membrane (80 = 8”, 40 = 4”, 25 = 2.5”)
  3. XX: Length of the membrane in inches
  4. X: Number of membranes
  5. a: Pressure identification (h (1200 psi), a (1000 psi), m (600 psi), b (400 psi), f (250 psi))

For example, OI80403m denotes an OI (end-ported) vessel, housing 3 membranes of 8” diameter, 40” length, and operating under 600 psi.

Operating limits

  • Design Pressure at 120 °F (50°C): 70 BAR (1000 PSI)
  • Operating pH Range: 3-11
  • Minimum Operating Temperature: 20°F (-7°C)
  • Cleaning pH Range (less than 30 minutes): 2-12
  • Maximum Operating Temperature: 120°F (50°C)
  • Factory Test Pressure: 1500 PSI
  • Burst Pressure: 6000 PSI
  • Permeate Port Pressure: Do not operate over 8.5 bar (125 psi). Higher pressures require factory approval.
  • The vessel is designed for positive pressure applications only and is not suitable for vacuum conditions.

Feed water

  • Application: Seawater
  • Feedwater TDS: ≤10000 ppm MAX

Mechanical / hydraulic

The vessel features a filament-wound reinforced plastic shell, which must be allowed to expand under pressure. The end closures must be kept dry and free of corrosion at all times.

Dimensions

Dimensional drawings and a table of various lengths (L, A, S) for models SL80401a through SL80408a are provided in the source document. The internal diameter (∅ 202 mm) and external diameter (∅ 228.5 mm) are indicated.

  • Standard membrane length: 40"
  • Standard membrane diameter: 8"
  • For a length code 8 vessel, expansion under pressure is noted as: ΔDIA = 0.012 in (0.3 mm) and ΔL = 0.15 in (4 mm).

See the official PDF for exact tabulated values.

Installation Recommendations

  • Mount shell using furnished hardware and recommended span(s) until straps are "just snug."
  • Use flexible type groove-end pipe couplings (e.g., Victaulic™ style 77 or equal fittings).
  • Allow a full 3.175 mm gap between each port/manifold connection.
  • Position the vessel and piping to allow for vessel expansion in length and diameter under pressure without undue restraint.
  • Set safety devices at no more than 105% of the design pressure.
  • Do not overtighten the Permeate Port connection (more than one turn past hand tight will damage the port).
  • Ensure the Thrust Ring is installed downstream.
  • Do not support other components with the vessel.
  • Inspect end closures regularly and replace damaged components.
  • Relieve system pressure before working on the vessel.

Procedures

Detailed procedures are provided for head loading, head removal, and head rebuilding, including step-by-step instructions for inspecting components, lubricating seals, and reassembly.
