Product Identification

The BEKAERT Model SL8040Xh Pressure Vessel is designed for continuous use as a housing for membrane filtration elements to purify seawater. It accommodates any make of eight-inch nominal diameter spiral-wound elements, as well as many hollow fiber elements. The element interface hardware is supplied with the vessel.

The Model SL8040Xh has been designed to meet the standards of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section X. At an additional cost, vessels can be inspected during fabrication by an ASME Authorized Inspector and Code stamped.

Model Identification Code

The model-numbering follows the pattern AAXX XX X where:

  • AA: Model of the Vessel (e.g., OI, SL, BK)
  • XX (first): Diameter of the membrane (e.g., 80 = 8”, 40 = 4”, 25 = 2.5”)
  • XX (second): Length of the membrane in inches
  • X (first): Number of membranes
  • X (second): Pressure identifications (h = 1200 psi, a = 1000 psi, m = 600 psi, b = 400 psi, f = 250 psi)

Example: OI80403m is a vessel (OI, end-ported) housing 3 membranes of 8” diameter, 40” length, operating under 600 psi.

Operating Limits

  • Design Pressure: 1200 PSI (83 BAR) at 120 °F (50 °C)
  • Operating pH Range: 3-11 (continuous use)
  • Cleaning pH Range: 2-12 (intermittent, less than 30 minutes)
  • Minimum Operating Temperature: 20°F (-7°C)
  • Maximum Operating Temperature: 120°F (50°C)
  • Permeate Port Pressure: Do not operate over 8.5 bar (125 psi). Pressures in excess must be approved by the factory.
  • Application: Only for positive pressure applications; not designed for vacuum conditions.

Feed Water

  • Application: Seawater
  • Feedwater TDS: ≤10000 ppm MAX

Mechanical / Hydraulic

  • Factory Test Pressure: 1800 PSI
  • Burst Pressure: 7200 PSI
  • Shell Expansion under Pressure:
    • ∆Diameter: 0.012 in (0.3 mm)
    • ∆Length: 0.15 in (4 mm) (for a length code 8 vessel)
  • Membrane Dimensions:

  • Connections:
    • Use flexible type groove-end pipe couplings.
    • Victaulic™ style 77 or equal fittings at each port, allowing a full 3.175 mm gap between port/manifold connections.
    • Do not over-tighten the Permeate Port connection (max one turn past hand tight).
  • Overpressure Protection: Set safety device at not more than 105% design pressure.

General Precautions and Best Practices

  • Double check end closure installation, ensuring the retaining ring is in place and fully seated.
  • Never operate the vessel in excess of its ratings.
  • Flush the vessel before system shutdown, especially with certain feed waters that may cause corrosion under static conditions, using non-corrosive permeate.
