Summary

Product Identification

This document provides a detailed overview for the Wila Membrane Housing, type ‘MH-6-16’, designed for low-pressure applications up to 16 bar. These membrane housings are utilized in the food and beverage industry for microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) processes to reduce or eliminate microbials in liquid products such as juice, beer, soy, whey, milk, milk powder, and chocolate.

The housing is constructed from EN 1.4404 (AISI 316L) stainless steel, featuring a sanitary surface finish. The inside surface roughness is ≤ 0.8 µm, and the outside surface roughness is ≤ 1.6 µm. All fluid media used with the housing must be compatible with EN 1.4404 (AISI 316L) Stainless steel.

The MH-6-16 series is designed to accommodate 6.3” x 38” (6338) membranes. Wila's hygienic, easy-to-CIP-clean, stainless steel ATDs can be supplied upon request, although membranes and ATDs are not included as part of the membrane housing.

Operating Limits

  • Maximum Pressure: 16 bar
  • Maximum Temperature: 70°C
  • Fluid Group: Designed for fluid group 2 (non-dangerous fluids) in accordance with PED - Article 4.3 (SEP).

Mechanical / Hydraulic

The membrane housing is a tubular pressure vessel with a single inlet (Feed) on the shell side, an unfiltered outlet (Retentate) on the shell side, and a filtered outlet (Permeate) from one of the end centers.

Connections

The housings feature collaring connections for Feed and Retentate and end clamp ferrule connections for Permeate.

  • Feed and Retentate Collaring Connections:
    • Common sizes: 76, 65, 63, 51, 50.
    • Specifically: Ø76, Ø63.5, Ø51 (translated from 76, 63, 51)
    • Specifically: DN65, DN50 (translated from 65, 50)
    • Weld ends for Feed and Retentate must have a minimum 2 mm wall thickness.
  • Permeate End Clamp Ferrule Connections:
    • Common sizes: 38, 25, 40, 26.
    • Specifically: Ø38, Ø25 (translated from 38, 25) in accordance with ISO 2852-2.
    • Specifically: DN40, DN25 (translated from 40, 26) in accordance with DIN 32676-A.
    • An SH clamp is recommended for the Permeate connection.

Installation

The membrane housing should be installed with the Retentate outlet at the highest point for optimal air venting.

Product Models

The MH-6-16 series is available in configurations supporting 1 to 6 membrane elements, with two primary connection arrangements: Model A and Model C. Each configuration specifies the number of elements, approximate volume, dry weight, and various dimensions.

  • 1-element: Volume 27 liters, Dry weight 25 kg.
  • 2-element: Volume 47 liters, Dry weight 35 kg.
  • 3-element: Volume 68 liters, Dry weight 45 kg.
  • 4-element: Volume 88 liters, Dry weight 55 kg.
  • 5-element: Volume 109 liters, Dry weight 65 kg.
  • 6-element: Volume 130 liters, Dry weight 75 kg.

The internal diameter (ID) of the permeate stream is Ø28.9 mm across all listed models. Specific dimensional values for TL, HL, CL, IL, and connections for Feed & Retentate and Permeate vary by model and configuration. See the official PDF for exact tabulated values and detailed drawings.

Regulations and Directives

The membrane housing is designed and manufactured in accordance with:

  • European Commission regulation No. 2023/2006 (Good Manufacturing Practices)
  • European Parliament directive No. EN 1935/2004 (Food Contact Materials)
  • European Parliament directive No. EN 1907/2006 (Chemical Restrictions (REACH))
  • PED - Article 4.3 (SEP) in the European Parliament directive No. 2014/68/EU (Pressure Equipment Directive)
