Summary

Product identification

This overview describes MHA-4-40 Membrane Housings manufactured by Wila A/S. These are tubular pressure vessels with collaring connections designed for membrane filtration in the food and beverage industry. They are suitable for MF, UF, NF, and RO filtration processes, often used to reduce or eliminate microbials in liquid-containing products like juice, beer, soy, whey, milk, milk powder, and chocolate.

The housings accommodate 3.8 x 38” (3838) membranes. Each housing features a single Feed inlet and Retentate outlet on the shell side, and a Permeate outlet from one of the end centers. Two main connection arrangements, Model A and Model C, are available, with other arrangements also possible.

Operating limits

  • Maximum Pressure: 40 bar
  • Maximum Temperature: 70°C

Materials of Construction

The Membrane Housing is constructed from EN 1.4404 (AISI 316L) stainless steel. It features a sanitary surface finish in accordance with the 3A sanitary standard.

  • Inside Surface Roughness: ≤ 0.8 µm
  • Outside Surface Roughness: ≤ 1.6 µm

All fluid media used with the Membrane Housing must be compatible with EN 1.4404 (AISI 316L) Stainless steel.

Connections

The housing features collaring connections for Feed and Retentate, and an end clamp ferrule connection for Permeate.

  • Feed and Retentate Connections:
    • Weld ends with a minimum 3 mm wall thickness are required.
    • Inside welds must be ground to ≤ 0.8 µm.
    • Available collaring connection sizes include:
      • Ø51, Ø38
      • DN50, DN40
      • 2.0”, 1.5”
    • Connection arrangements are designated as Model A or Model C, with other arrangements available.
  • Permeate Connection:
    • An SH clamp is recommended.
    • Available clamp ferrule connection sizes include:
      • Ø25 (in accordance with ISO 2852-2)
      • DN25 (in accordance with DIN 32676-A)
      • 1.0” (in accordance with DIN 32676-C)

The Membrane Housing should be installed with the Retentate outlet at the highest point for better air venting.

Performance & Dimensions

The housings are designed for 3.8 x 38" (3838) membranes, with an internal diameter (ID) of Ø21.1 for the membrane elements.

Specific volumes and dry weights are provided based on the number of elements:

  • 1-element: Volume 9 liters, Dry weight 10 kg
  • 2-element: Volume 16.5 liters, Dry weight 15 kg
  • 3-element: Volume 24 liters, Dry weight 20 kg
  • 4-element: Volume 31 liters, Dry weight 25 kg
  • 5-element: Volume 38.5 liters, Dry weight 29 kg
  • 6-element: Volume 46 liters, Dry weight 34 kg

Detailed dimensional drawings (TL, HL, CL, IL, all in millimeters) and specific part numbers for various connection size combinations are available in the provided tables for both Model A and Model C configurations. See the official PDF for exact tabulated values.

Certifications & Compliance
