Summary

Product identification

  • Product Line: THEA
  • Type: Tubular Heat Exchanger
  • Pressure Rating: High Pressure - 60 BAR

Applications

Tubular heat exchangers of type THEA are commonly used in the food and beverage industry, including CIP units. They are employed for microbial reduction to ensure product safety and extend shelf life, as well as for heating or cooling products before processing steps such as filling, drying, or concentration.

Regulations and Directives

The heat exchanger is designed and manufactured in accordance with:

  • European Commission regulation No. 2023/2006 (Good Manufacturing Practices)
  • European Parliament directive No. EN 1935/2004 (Food Contact Materials)
  • European Parliament directive No. EN 1907/2006 (Chemical Restrictions (REACH))
  • PED - Article 4.3 (SEP) in the European Parliament directive No. 2014/68/EU (Pressure Equipment Directive). Designed for fluid group 2 (non-dangerous fluids).
  • 3-A Sanitary Standards 00-01 / 12-08

Material and Construction

  • Material: EN.1.4404 (AISI 316L) stainless steel with a sanitary surface finish.
  • Design: Two pressure chambers in a combined housing.
    • Tube side (Product side): Consists of the inside of all tubes in the tube bundle.
    • Shell side (Service side): Consists of the outside of the tube bundle and the inside of the exchanger's outer shell.
  • Surface Roughness:
    • Inside surface roughness: ≤ 0.8 μm
    • Outside surface roughness: ≤ 1.6 µm
  • Fluid Compatibility: All fluid media must be compatible with EN.1.4404 (AISI 316L) Stainless Steel.

Operating Limits

Product Side (Tube Side)

  • Maximum Pressure: 60 bar[g] (870 PSI)
  • Maximum Temperature: 85°C

Service Side (Shell Side) - Maximum Pressure and Temperature Limits (Steam)

  • 0.5 m² and 1 m² sizes: 10 bar[g] / 185°C
  • 2 m² size: 8 bar[g] / 176°C
  • 3 m² size: 6 bar[g] / 165°C

For pressure and temperature limits with fluids other than steam, refer to the "Heat exchangers – pressure and temperature relations" document.

Group Specifications and Ordering Codes

The general ordering code is THEA-xx-133-60, where:

  • THEA: Indicates a Tubular Heat Exchanger with a 3A certificate.
  • xx: Represents the heat transfer surface area in m² (.5, 01, 02, 03).
  • 133: Indicates the heat exchanger shell diameter in mm (Ø133).
  • 60: Indicates the design pressure of up to 60 bar.

A more detailed code THEA-xx-xxx-yyy-zz includes connection types:

  • xx, xxx: As above.
  • yyy: Tube side clamp ferrule connection size.
  • zz: Shell side clamp ferrule connection size.

Connections

  • Tube Side (P1 and P2) Connections for Ø133 shell:
    • In accordance with DIN 32676-A: DN100, DN80, DN65
    • In accordance with ISO 2852-2: 4” (Ø101.6), 3” (Ø76.1), 2.5” (Ø63.5)
  • Shell Side (S1 and S2) Connections for Ø133 shell:
    • In accordance with DIN 32676-A: DN50, DN40
    • In accordance with ISO 2852-2: 2” (Ø51), 1.5” (Ø38)

Other connection types and sizes are available upon request.

SSH clamping rings (or similar) are recommended. For steam connections, the outlet should be at the lowest point. For liquids, the outlet should be at the highest point for air removal.
