Measuring Principle
The Levelflex operates using the time-of-flight method, also known as TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry). High-frequency pulses are sent along a probe, reflected by the product surface, and the time taken for the pulse to return is converted into a distance measurement.
- The distance (D) to the product surface is calculated as: D = c · t/2, where 'c' is the speed of light and 't' is the time of flight.
- The level (L) is then calculated based on the empty distance (E): L = E – D.
- Interference echo suppression functions are available to prevent false readings from internal tank fixtures.
Interface Measurement
For interface measurement, the instrument utilizes the reflection from the surface of the upper medium and the interface between two media with different dielectric constants (DC).
Conditions for Interface Measurement:
- The DC of the upper medium must be known and constant (though FMP55 may allow for changing DC under certain conditions).
- The DC of the upper medium should not be greater than 10.
- The DC difference between the upper and lower medium must be >10.
- The upper medium must have a minimum thickness of 60 mm (2.4 in).
- Emulsion layers up to 50 mm (2 in) are admissible; thicker layers can attenuate the signal.
Measuring System and Probes
