- Document Number: BA02352D/06/EN/02.25-00
- Device Firmware Version: V01.09
Intended Use
The Liquicap FTZ61 is a compact instrument for capacitive measurement of foam level in non-conducting containers (e.g., plastic or glass) in industrial settings, specifically for single-use bags in cell culture processes. The device and sensor are designed for external mounting and are not intended for direct contact with foam.
Safety Instructions
- The device is not intended for use in potentially explosive areas.
- Only trained specialist personnel authorized by the facility owner/operator should perform installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance.
- Unauthorized modifications are not permitted and can lead to unforeseeable dangers.
- Repairs should only be carried out by the manufacturer or authorized distributors using original spare parts.
- The device is designed with state-of-the-art technology and meets applicable standards and EU directives.
- Always wear required personal protective equipment as per national regulations.
Product Description
The Liquicap FTZ61 determines foam level by measuring changes in capacitance. The sensor uses a three-electrode arrangement (sensor, ground, and guard electrode) to measure capacitance between the sensor and ground electrodes, with the guard electrode mitigating external interferences.

Commissioning
Empty Calibration
- Stores the capacitance value of the sensor when not covered by foam or liquid.
- Output current is 4 mA after empty calibration.
- Requires setting the function switch to position 2 and pressing the empty calibration push-button for at least 2 seconds.
Full Calibration
- Adapts measurement to process conditions with significant foam coverage.
- Output current is 20 mA after full calibration.
- Requires setting the function switch to position 3 and pressing the "+" key until the green LED flashes.
Change Calibration
Allows resetting or overwriting existing calibration points. The full calibration capacitive value must be higher than the empty calibration value.
Operation
Human Interface and Display Elements
- Function Switch (A): Selects operating mode (Diagnostic, Measuring, Calibration, Span, Damping).
- Push-button (B): Used for empty calibration.
- Key "+" (C): Used for full calibration and parameter adjustment.
- LEDs: Indicate status (ready, error, switching state).

Error Current / Warning
- All internal errors result in an output current < 3.6 mA.
- If capacitance > 500 pF, an error message is displayed (red LED flashes). Calibration is not possible.
- If an error current occurs after empty calibration, disconnect the sensor, recalibrate. If the output is still 4 mA, replace the sensor.
Maintenance and Servicing
No special maintenance is required. The housing cover should only be removed by qualified personnel. Avoid modifying internal electronics.
Cleaning
Use cleaning agents that do not corrode the housing surface or seals.
Disposal
Follow national regulations. Minimize disposal of WEEE as unsorted municipal waste by returning to the manufacturer. Ensure the device is free of hazardous residues before disposal.
