Function
The FQG60 source container houses a radioactive source within a lead-filled steel casing, screening gamma radiation. Radiation is emitted directionally through a focusing channel for radiometric measurement.
- Attenuation factor (FS) in beam direction: 11 (half-value-layers: 3.5)
- Attenuation factor (FS) opposite beam direction: 22 (half-value-layers: 4.5)
- Maximum activity of radiation source: ¹³⁷Cs - 1.11 GBq (30 mCi)
Mechanical Construction
- Weight: Max. 18 kg (39.69 lbs)
- Materials:
- Source insert and internal components: Stainless steel 304 (1.4301)
- Housing: Stainless steel 304 (1.4301), glass bead blasted
- Exterior seal: Pure graphite and metal-backed graphite gasket
- Screening material: Lead (shutter), Lead and 304 (1.4301) (housing/source holder)
- Padlock: Brass (body), Hardened steel (shackle)
- Snap hook: 316 L (1.4404)
Ambient Conditions
- Ambient temperature: –40 to +120 °C (–40 to +248 °F)
- Ambient pressure: Atmospheric pressure
- Vibration resistance: IEC EN 60068-2-64 test Fh; 10 to 2000 Hz; 0.01 g²/Hz
- Shock: IEC-60068-2-27 test Ea (30 g; 18 ms; 3 shocks / direction / axis)
- Degree of protection: IP66; NEMA Type 4
- Fire resistance: 30 min. @ 821 °C (1510 °F)
Identification
- Nameplates: Include source container ID, serial number, order code, emission angle, local dose rate, radiation source details (serial number, radionuclide, activity, date).
Installation
- Incoming acceptance, transport: Functions as Type-A packaging (IATA rules). Package dimensions: 375 x 375 x 275 mm (14.8 x 14.8 x 10.8 in). Bow-type handles are for shutter operation, not transport. Use fastening lug for lifting.
- Mounting: Can be mounted using L-profiles or a mounting plate, on low-vibration external constructions, or directly on pipes with the FHG61 clamping device (accessory). Mounting and dismounting must be in the "OFF" position, secured by a padlock.
- Torque for mounting screws: 32 Nm (23.6 lbf ft) for stainless steel screws with a minimum tensile strength of 700 N/mm².
Operation
- Switching Radiation ON: Ensure no personnel are in the radiation area. Only specially trained personnel may switch the radiation ON. Remove padlock (if applicable), move shutter to ON position, secure with padlock or snap hook.
- Switching Radiation OFF: Reverse of switching ON. Remove snap hook or padlock, move shutter to OFF position, secure with padlock.
- Recalibration (Density Measurement): Requires an optional calibration plate. Shutter must be in the ON position. Recalibration involves introducing the plate into the radiation path under constant conditions (empty pipe or filled with defined medium) and recording the displayed density value.
Maintenance and Inspection
- Cleaning: Clean with a damp cloth and water. Observe safety instructions.
- Routine Inspections:
- Visual inspection for corrosion.
- Test shutter mobility (ON/OFF function).
- Check label readability and warning symbols.
- Test padlock and snap hook function.
- Routine Shutter Mobility Test: Move shutter between ON and OFF positions to ensure easy movement without visible corrosion.
- Routine Leak Test Procedure: Wipe samples are taken at indicated points and analyzed. A source is considered leaking if > 185 Bq (5 nCi) is detected (US limit).
Emergency Procedure
- Objective: Secure an area where an exposed source is known or suspected, or if the source container cannot be switched OFF.
- Procedure: Cordon off the area. If the shutter cannot be switched OFF, unbolt the container, pointing the emission channel towards a thick wall or mounting a plate in front of it. If the source is outside the container, handle with pliers/tongs and minimize transport time.
- Notification to Authority: Notify local authorities within 24 hours.
Procedures after termination of the application
- Internal Measures: Switch off the source container, remove it according to regulations, and store it in a lockable room. Inform authorities. Do not scrap the source with plant parts; return it.
- Return: Contact Endress+Hauser Sales Center for return organization (reuse or recycling). An inspection certificate (wipe test) no older than three months is required.
