Application
The CCS51 is a free chlorine sensor designed for skid builders and end customers. It is suitable for measuring free chlorine in:
- Drinking water
- Food industry
- Utilities
- Pool water
Function and system design
Measuring principle
The sensor uses an amperometric measuring principle to determine free chlorine levels, based on hypochlorous acid (HOCl). HOCl diffuses through a sensor membrane and is reduced at a gold cathode, while silver is oxidized at a silver anode. The resulting current is proportional to the free chlorine concentration. A pH measurement is used to compensate for the dependency of HOCl concentration on pH. The transmitter calculates the concentration in mg/l (ppm) from the current signal.
The sensor comprises a membrane cap (measuring chamber with membrane) and a sensor shaft with an anode and a cathode embedded in plastic. The electrodes are separated from the medium by a membrane which prevents electrolyte leakage and contamination. Calibration is performed by colorimetric comparison measurement using the DPD method.
A complete measuring system includes the CCS51 sensor, a Flowfit CCA250 flow assembly, and a transmitter (e.g., Liquisys CCM223/253). Optional components include an immersion assembly (Flexdip CYA112) and a proximity switch.
