Summary

Product Identification

Memosens CPS41E is a digital pH sensor utilizing Memosens 2.0 technology with a ceramic junction and KCl liquid electrolyte.

Application

This sensor is designed for media with very low conductivity or a high proportion of organic solvents or alcohol, suitable for:

  • Chemical industry
  • Organic chemicals
  • Power stations
  • Laboratory measurements

It is approved for hazardous areas (Zone 0, 1, and 2) with ATEX, IECEx, CSA C/US, NEPSI, Japan, and INMETRO certifications.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Low Conductivity Operation: Possible due to KCl liquid electrolyte.
  • Reference System: Ceramic junction with specified KCl flow rate; available with 1 or 3 ceramic junctions (SC reference system).
  • Pressure Tolerance: Usable up to 11 bar (absolute) when counterpressure is applied.
  • Poison Resistance: Achieved through a separate reference capillary.
  • Hygiene: Suitable for cleaning in place (CIP) and sterilization in place (SIP).
  • Temperature Compensation: Integrated NTC 30K temperature sensor.
  • Memosens Technology:
    • Non-contact, inductive signal transmission for maximum process safety.
    • Digital data transmission for data security.
    • Sensor data (calibration, operating history) stored in the sensor for easy handling and predictive maintenance.

Measuring Principle

The sensor measures pH by detecting the electrochemical potential generated by H⁺ ion accumulation on the membrane glass. An Ag/AgCl reference system is used. The measured voltage is converted to a pH value using the Nernst equation.

Measuring System Components

A complete measuring system includes:

  • pH sensor CPS41E
  • Memosens data cable (CYK10 or CYK20)
  • Transmitter (e.g., Liquiline CM44, CM42)
  • Assembly (e.g., immersion, flow, retractable, permanent installation)
  • Electrolyte vessel (CPY7B)
  • Optional: Automatic cleaning and calibration system (e.g., Liquiline Control CDC90)

Data Storage and Communication

Digital sensors with Memosens technology store data including:

  • Manufacturer data
  • Serial number
  • Order code
  • Date of manufacture
  • Calibration data (date, slope, zero point, history, calibration transmitter serial number)
  • Operating data (temperature/pH application ranges, commissioning date, max temperature, hours of operation, sterilization/CIP counts, sensor load)

This data can be viewed with transmitters like Liquiline CM42, CM44x, and Memobase Plus CYZ71D.

Dependability and Reliability

Memosens technology ensures easy calibration in a lab, quick sensor replacement, accurate maintenance interval definition, and the ability to document sensor history. Digital data transmission provides interference immunity and reliable detection of connection issues.

Safety

Memosens technology provides maximum process safety by eliminating moisture-related issues like corrosion and distorted measurements. The transmitter is galvanically decoupled from the medium. Intrinsically safe electronics allow operation in hazardous areas.

Input Parameters

  • Measured Variables: pH value, Temperature
  • Measuring Ranges:
    • Application A: pH 1 to 12, Temperature –15 to 80 °C (5 to 176 °F)
    • Application B: pH 0 to 14, Temperature 0 to 135 °C (32 to 275 °F)

Electrical

  • Power Supply: Via Memosens data cable (CYK10 or CYK20) connected to a Memosens-compatible transmitter.

Performance Characteristics

  • Reference System: Ag/AgCl reference lead, bridging electrolyte: liquid KCl, 3M.
  • Conductivity:
    • SB reference system: Minimum 5 μS/cm
    • SC reference system: Minimum 0.1 μS/cm (Requires minimized flow; pressure and temperature must remain constant)

Installation

  • Orientation: Install at an angle of at least 15° from the horizontal to prevent air bubble formation. Do not install upside-down.
  • Torque: Hand-tighten with 3 Nm (2.21 lbf ft) when installing in Endress+Hauser assemblies.

Environment

  • Ambient Temperature Range: Not specified, but frost risk below –15 °C (5 °F).
  • Storage Temperature: 0 to 50 °C (32 to 122 °F).
  • Degree of Protection: IP 68 (10 m water column, 25 °C, 45 days, 1 M KCl).
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): As per EN 61326-1:2013.

Process

  • Process Temperature Range:
    • Application A: –15 to 80 °C (5 to 176 °F)
    • Application B: 0 to 135 °C (32 to 275 °F)
  • Process Pressure Range: 0.8 to 11 bar (11.6 to 159.5 psi) absolute.
  • KCl Consumption: Varies with temperature and applied counterpressure. Sensors with three junctions consume three times more KCl than single-junction sensors.

Mechanical Construction

  • Design: Features a Memosens plug-in head, hose connection for KCl refill, ceramic junction, and integrated temperature sensor.
  • Installed Lengths: Available in 120 mm, 225 mm, 360 mm, and 425 mm.
  • Weight: Ranges from 70 g to 130 g depending on length.
  • Materials: Sensor shaft (Glass), pH membrane glass (Type A and B), Metal lead (Ag/AgCl), Junction (Ceramic, zirconium dioxide), O-ring (FKM), Process coupling (PPS fiber-glass reinforced), Plug-in head (Memosens plug-in head with KCl hose connection, pressure resistance 16 bar relative).
