Function and System Design
Measuring Principle
The spectrometer uses optical signals to analyze the liquid. Light is passed through the sample, and the transmitted light is collected and analyzed to determine measurement parameters. The principle is based on the Lambert-Beer law, which describes a linear dependency between light absorption and the concentration of the absorbing substance:
A = -log₁₀ (I/I₀) = ε . c . OPL
Where:
- A = Absorption
- I = Intensity of received light at detector
- I₀ = Intensity of transmitted light of light source
- ε = Extinction coefficient
- c = Concentration
- OPL = Optical path length
Measuring System Components
A complete measuring system includes:
- Process spectrometer CKI50
- Liquiline CM44P transmitter
- Process connection Varivent N DN50 - 125 with an immersion depth of 68 mm (2.7 in)
Communication and Data Processing
The CKI50 utilizes Memosens technology for digital sensor communication with a Memosens-enabled transmitter. This technology allows for:
- Storage of sensor data in the sensor itself (manufacturer data, serial number, order code, calibration data, operating data, etc.).
- Automatic transfer of sensor data to the transmitter upon connection.
- Independent calibration of the sensor in a lab.
- Quick and easy replacement of pre-calibrated sensors.
- Predictive maintenance capabilities based on sensor history.
- Digital data transmission via a non-contact connection, ensuring interference immunity and data security.
- Automatic error messages for sensor failure or connection interruption.
Input

- L* (lightness axis): Specified operational range: 0 to 100
- a* (green-red axis): Specified operational range: –150 to 100
- b* (yellow-blue axis): Specified operational range: –100 to 150
Measuring Range
- Wavelength: Halogen wavelength range from 380 to 830 nm
- CIE L*a*b*:
- L*: 0 to 100
- a*: -150 to 100
- b*: -100 to 150
Electrical Connection
The device connects via its fixed cable to the plug-in terminals of a transmitter input. The cable length is 15 m (49.2 ft).
Performance Characteristics
Reference Conditions
- Temperature: 25 °C (77 °F)
- Pressure: 1013 hPa (15 psi)
- Heat-up time: 5 hours
Repeatability
| Measured Variable | Specified Operational Range | Repeatability |
|---|---|---|
| L* | 0 to 100 | < 0.1 % of the span of the specified range¹⁾ |
| a* | -150 to 100 | < 0.1 % of the span of the specified range¹⁾ |
| b* | -100 to 150 | < 0.1 % of the span of the specified range¹⁾ |
¹⁾ Measured according to DIN ISO 15839 with liquid color solutions.
Long-Term Reliability (Drift per 24h)
| Measured Variable | Specified Operational Range | Drift per 24h |
|---|---|---|
| L* | 0 to 100 | < 0.03 % of the span of the specified range¹⁾ |
| a* | -150 to 100 | < 0.03 % of the span of the specified range¹⁾ |
| b* | -100 to 150 | < 0.03 % of the span of the specified range¹⁾ |
¹⁾ Measured according to DIN ISO 15839 with liquid color solutions. Regular referencing helps compensate for drift.
Mounting
Orientation
The device must be aligned so that the medium flows through the measurement gap. Installation markings on the process connection indicate the correct alignment following the flow direction. It is recommended to install in an ascending pipe. A minimum distance of 1 m (3.28 ft) from pipe bends is advised due to potential turbulence.
Installation Instructions
- Install in an easily accessible location.
- Install upstream from pressure regulators.
- Install in areas with uniform flow and low vibration.
- Avoid locations with potential for air collection, foam formation, or settling of suspended particles.
- Ensure the measurement gap is rinsed by the medium flow.
- Install for in-process cleaning.
Environment
- Ambient Temperature Range: –20 to 45 °C (–4 to 113 °F)
- Storage Temperature: –20 to 70 °C (–4 to 158 °F)
- Degree of Protection: IP 69, NEMA 6P
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): According to EN 61326-1, EN 61326-2-3, and NAMUR NE21.
Process
- Process Temperature Range:
- –20 to 60 °C (–4 to 140 °F)
- 60 to 140 °C (140 to 284 °F) with water cooling. Note: Operation above 60 °C (140 °F) requires cooling to prevent permanent damage.
- Process Pressure Range: 0.5 to 10 bar (7.3 to 145 psi) (absolute)
- Flow Limit: No minimum flow required. For media prone to deposits, ensure sufficient mixing.
- Recommended Flow for Cooling: 10 l/h (2.64 gal/h)
