Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: Turbimax CUS71D
  • Product Type: Ultrasonic interface sensor
  • Document ID: TI00490C/07/EN/05.18
  • Part Number: 71413605
  • Date: 2018-05-01

Application

The CUS71D is an ultrasonic sensor designed for interface measurement in water and wastewater treatment processes. It is suitable for:

  • Wastewater treatment: Primary clarifier, sludge thickener, secondary clarifier.
  • Water treatment: Sedimentation tank after flocculant dosage, sludge height in contact sludge processes.
  • Static separation processes: With or without slow stirring and without air introduction.

Benefits

  • Reliable: Provides accurate and continuous interface level or range measurement.
  • Safe: Real-time interface information allows for quick control of valves and actuators.
  • Easy: Simple commissioning with predefined calculation models.
  • Cost-saving: Features an automatic wiper cleaning function for long-term, maintenance-free operation.
  • Smart: Stores all calibration and sensor-related data within the sensor.
  • Flexible: Mounting hardware adapts to various clarifier designs.

Measuring principle

The sensor utilizes a piezoelectric crystal that generates sonar signals at approximately 650 kHz, transmitted at a 6° angle. The measurement is based on the time it takes for the ultrasonic signal to travel to the separation zone and return. The separation zone is determined by analyzing the maximum slope and signal amplitude. A version with a wiper is available to prevent deposit buildup on the sensor membrane.

Measuring system

A complete measuring system includes:

  • Turbimax CUS71D ultrasonic sensor
  • Liquiline CM44x multi-channel transmitter

Optional accessories include a weather protection cover (CYY101), a Flexdip CYH112 holder, and a Flexdip CYA112 dip pipe.

Dependability

Memosens technology

Memosens technology enhances safety and reliability through:

  • Non-contact, digital signal transmission for optimum galvanic isolation.
  • Watertight construction.
  • Independent sensor calibration in a lab, increasing process availability.
  • Predictive maintenance capabilities based on recorded sensor data (operating hours, temperature, sterilizations, sensor condition).

Maintainability

Sensors with Memosens technology store calibration data and other information internally. This allows for:

  • Easy calibration in a lab environment.
  • Quick replacement of pre-calibrated sensors, increasing measuring point availability.
  • Accurate definition of maintenance intervals and predictive maintenance.
  • Documentation of sensor history for application adjustments.

Security

Memosens technology digitizes measured values within the sensor and transmits them to the transmitter via a non-contact connection, ensuring data security and interference-free operation. Automatic error messages are generated upon sensor failure or connection interruption.

Input

  • Measured variable: Interface
  • Measuring range: 0.3 to 10 m (1 to 32 ft)

Power supply & Electrical connection

  • Transmitter compatibility: Connect one sensor to Liquiline CM442; up to 4 sensors to Liquiline CM444 and CM448.
  • Maximum cable length: 100 m (328 ft).
  • Cable extension: Use CYK11 measuring cable or cable/cable junction box.
  • Cable shielding: Shielded cables are required. Grounding is achieved using a grounding clip (tighten screw to 2 Nm).

Performance characteristics

  • Reference operating conditions: 20 °C (68 °F), 1013 hPa.
  • Measured value resolution: ± 0.3 % (up to 3 m) or ± 0.15 % (from 3 m).
  • Maximum measured error: ± 2 % of the end of the measuring range.
  • Measuring interval: Sensor-internal (configurable), 12 seconds (sensor to transmitter).
  • Calibration: Factory-configured.

Installation

Installation instructions

  • Positioning: Ensure a minimum distance of 50 cm (1.64 ft) from the basin rim. Avoid areas with conduits, protrusions, air bubbles, turbulence, high turbidity, or foam.
  • Alignment: Mount the sensor straight and parallel to the basin wall.
  • Immersion depth: Install the sensor at least 20 cm (0.66 ft) below the water surface using a dip pipe.

Basin configuration

The sensor emits ultrasonic waves in a 6° conical pattern. Minimum distances to basin features are critical for accurate measurement.

Environment

  • Storage temperature: –20 to 50 °C (–4 to 120 °F).
  • Degree of protection: IP 68 (1 m water column over 60 days, 1 mol/l KCl).
  • Process temperature range: 1 to 50 °C (34 to 122 °F).
  • Process pressure range:
    • Standard version: 0 to 6 bar (0 to 87 psi).
    • Version with wiper: 0 to 0.3 bar (0 to 4.4 psi).
