Installation

General Instructions

  • Devices with G 1 1/2 thread: Use flat seals; do not use hemp for sealing.
  • Devices with NPT threads: Use Teflon tape for sealing. Tighten at the hexagonal bolt only.
    • Maximum torque for NPT threads: 20 to 30 Nm (14.75 to 22.13 lbf ft).
  • For process connections ISO228 G1/2 and DIN13 M20 x 1.5, the maximum tightening torque is 40 Nm (29.50 lbf ft).
  • Sensor modules with PVDF threaded process connections must be installed with the provided mounting bracket.
  • The integrity of PVDF threads should be checked regularly and may need re-tightening to a maximum of 7 Nm (5.16 lbf ft). Teflon tape is recommended for sealing ½" NPT threads.

Mounting Configurations

  • Devices without diaphragm seals (PMP51, PMC51):
    • Keep pressure compensation and GORE-TEX® filter free from dirt.
    • Recommended use of shutoff devices and siphons.
    • Mounting orientation depends on the measuring application.
    • Do not clean or touch process membranes with hard or pointed objects.
    • Pressure measurement in gases: Mount above the tapping point so condensate flows into the process.
    • Pressure measurement in steam: Preferably mount with an O-shaped siphon below the tapping point; fill siphon before commissioning. Observe maximum permitted ambient temperature.
    • Pressure measurement in liquids: Mount below or at the same level as the tapping point.
    • Level measurement: Always install below the lowest measuring point; avoid fill flow, points affected by agitator pulses, and pump suction areas.
  • Devices with diaphragm seals (PMP55):
    • Installation method depends on the diaphragm seal type (screwed, flanged, or clamped).
    • Capillaries must be mounted vibration-free, with a bending radius of ≥ 100 mm (3.94 in), and insulated if ambient temperature deviates significantly from the reference temperature. Do not use capillaries as a carrying aid.
    • The diaphragm seal and transmitter form a sealed, calibrated system; do not open the filling hole.
  • Wall and pipe mounting (optional): A mounting bracket is available for pipe diameters from 1 ¼" to 2". Nuts on the bracket should be tightened uniformly to at least 5 Nm (3.69 lbf ft).
  • "Separate housing" version:
    • Mounting bracket suitable for pipe and wall mounting (pipe diameters 1 ¼" to 2").
    • Tighten nuts uniformly to at least 5 Nm (3.69 lbf ft).
    • Mount the cable with a bending radius (r) ≥ 120 mm (4.72 in).
  • Version XSJ (prepared for diaphragm seal mount): Welding recommendation for fillet weld: 1 mm depth, 16 mm outer diameter, using WIG method.

Post-Installation Check

  • Verify device is undamaged.
  • Confirm device complies with measuring point specifications (process temperature, pressure, ambient temperature, measuring range).
  • Check measuring point identification and labeling.
  • Ensure adequate protection against precipitation and direct sunlight.
  • Verify mounting screw and securing clamp are tightened.

Electrical Connection

General Instructions

  • Switch off supply voltage before connecting.
  • When used in hazardous areas, comply with applicable national standards, regulations, and safety instructions.
  • A suitable disconnector must be installed.
  • Devices with integrated overvoltage protection must be grounded.
  • Protective circuits for reverse polarity, HF influences, and overvoltage peaks are integrated.
  • Use twisted, shielded two-wire cable.
  • Tighten cable glands to be leak-tight.

Connection Types

  • 4 to 20 mA analog output:
    • Supply voltage: 11.5 to 45 V DC (35 V DC for versions with plug-in connector).
    • Connection terminals for supply and signal.
    • Test terminals allow measurement of the 4 to 20 mA signal without interrupting operation. A current measuring device should have an internal resistance of < 0.7 Ω for measurement error < 0.1%.
  • Terminals:
    • Supply voltage and internal ground: 0.5 to 2.5 mm² (20 to 14 AWG).
    • External ground terminal: 0.5 to 4 mm² (20 to 12 AWG).
  • Cable specification:
    • Recommended: Twisted, shielded two-wire cables.
    • Cable outer diameter: 5 to 9 mm.
  • Load: Maximum load resistance (RLmax) depends on supply voltage (U) according to the formula: RLmax = (U – 11.5 V) / 0.023 A.
  • Shielding/potential equalization: For optimum shielding, connect shielding on both sides. If potential equalization currents are expected, ground shielding on one side only, preferably at the transmitter.

Overvoltage Protection (Optional)

  • Devices with "NA" in feature 610 of the order code are equipped with overvoltage protection.
  • Installation length is approximately 70 mm (2.76 in).
  • When tightening/loosening the union nut, use a wrench to hold the screw steady.

Post-Connection Check

  • Verify supply voltage matches nameplate specification.
  • Confirm proper device connection.
  • Ensure all screws are firmly tightened.
  • Check that housing covers are screwed down tight.

Operation

Operating Elements

  • DIP switch: Controls damping (on/off). Factory setting for damping is typically t = 2 s.
  • Operating keys:
    • "Zero" (brief press): Displays lower range value.
    • "Zero" (≥ 3 s): Accepts present pressure as the lower range value (LRV).
    • "Span" (brief press): Displays upper range value.
    • "Span" (≥ 3 s): Accepts present pressure as the upper range value (URV).
    • "Zero" and "Span" (brief press): Displays position adjustment.
    • "Zero" and "Span" (≥ 3 s): Performs position adjustment (shifts sensor characteristic curve so present pressure becomes zero value).
    • "Zero" and "Span" (≥ 12 s): Resets all parameters to order configuration.

Device Display (Optional)

  • Four-line liquid crystal display (LCD).
  • Shows measured values, fault messages, and notice messages.
  • Display can be removed and rotated in 90° stages for easier reading.
  • Functions include:
