Measuring Principle
Resistance Thermometers (RTD)
- Utilizes Pt100 sensors conforming to IEC 60751.
- Wire-Wound (WW): Suitable for temperatures up to 600 °C (1 112 °F), but more sensitive to vibrations.
- Thin-Film (TF): Smaller size and better vibration resistance. Tolerance Class A as per IEC 60751 up to approx. 300 °C (572 °F).
Thermocouples (TC)
- Based on the Seebeck effect.
- Measure temperature differences; absolute temperature requires knowledge of the cold junction temperature.
- Standardized by IEC 60584 and ASTM E230/ANSI MC96.1.
Input and Measuring Ranges
- Measured Variable: Temperature (temperature-linear transmission).
- Measuring Range (Examples):
- Pt100 thin film (TF), basic: –50 to +200 °C (–58 to +392 °F)
- Pt100 thin film (TF), iTHERM StrongSens: –50 to +500 °C (–58 to +932 °F)
- Pt100 wire wound (WW), extended: –200 to +600 °C (–328 to +1 112 °F)
- Thermocouple TC, type J: –40 to +750 °C (–40 to +1 382 °F)
- Thermocouple TC, type K: –40 to +1 100 °C (–40 to +2 012 °F)
Output and Transmitters
- Output Signal: Via directly-wired sensors or iTEMP transmitters.
- iTEMP Transmitters: Available with various communication protocols:
- 4 to 20 mA
- HART® (optional Bluetooth®)
- PROFIBUS® PA
- FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus™
- PROFINET® and Ethernet-APL™
- IO-Link®
- Field Transmitters: Available with HART®, FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus™, or PROFIBUS® PA communication.
Performance Characteristics
Maximum Measurement Error (RTD)
- Class A: ± (0.15 + 0.002 · |t|) °C
- Class AA: ± (0.1 + 0.0017 · |t|) °C
- Class B: ± (0.3 + 0.005 · |t|) °C (|t| = absolute temperature value in °C)
Response Time (Typical values in water, 0.4 m/s, 10 K change)
- Standard Pt100 (TF, WW): t50 = 5 s, t90 = 11 s
- iTHERM QuickSens: t50 = 0.5 s, t90 = 1.5 s
- Thermocouple (TC) Type J, K, N: t50 = 2.5 s, t90 = 7 s
Insulation Resistance
- RTD: > 100 MΩ at +25 °C (100 V DC)
- TC: > 1 GΩ at +20 °C (500 V DC); > 5 MΩ at +500 °C (500 V DC)
Installation
- Orientation: No restrictions, but self-draining is recommended depending on the application.
- Immersion Length: Influences measurement accuracy; at least half the pipe diameter is recommended for installation in pipes.
Environmental Conditions
- Ambient Temperature Range (Terminal Head):
- Without transmitter: Depends on head/gland.
- With iTEMP head transmitter: –40 to +85 °C (–40 to +185 °F).
- With iTEMP head transmitter and display: –20 to +70 °C (–4 to +158 °F).
- Storage Temperature: –40 to +85 °C (–40 to +185 °F).
- Humidity: Max. 95% relative humidity (non-condensing).
- Degree of Protection: Max. IP 66 (NEMA Type 4x), partly IP 68.
Shock and Vibration Resistance
- Exceeds IEC 60751 requirements (3g, 10-500 Hz).
- iTHERM StrongSens / QuickSens (ø6 mm): 600 m/s² (60g).
- Other types: Generally ≤ 30 m/s² (≤ 3g) or ≤ 40 m/s² (≤ 4g).
Process Conditions
- Process Temperature Range: –200 to +1 100 °C (–328 to +2 012 °F) (depends on sensor/material).
