Summary

Product identification

The iTHERM ModuLine TM131 is an innovative, highly modular, and robust RTD or TC thermometer designed for a wide range of industrial applications.

Application

  • For universal use.
  • Measuring range: –200 to +1,100 °C (–328 to +2,012 °F).
  • Pressure range up to 100 bar (1,450 psi).
  • Vibration-resistant sensor elements up to 60g.
  • Improved ease of maintenance: sensor replacement without process shutdown and easy, safe recalibration.

Measuring principle

  • Resistance thermometers (RTD): Utilize a Pt100 sensor with a resistance of 100 Ω at 0 °C. Available as wire-wound (WW) or thin-film (TF) sensors. TF sensors offer smaller sizes and better vibration resistance.
  • Thermocouples (TC): Employ the Seebeck effect to measure temperature differences. Standardized types include J, K, and N.

Measuring system components

  • Power supply unit/barrier
  • Display units
  • Surge arrester

Modular design

The thermometer features a modular design with several configurable options:

  • Terminal head: Available in aluminum, polyamide, or stainless steel.
  • Wiring, electrical connection, output signal: Options include ceramic terminal blocks, flying leads, and head transmitters with various output protocols (4 to 20 mA, HART®, Ethernet-APL, PROFIBUS® PA, FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus, IO-Link®).
  • Plug or cable gland: Polyamide or brass cable glands, M12, and 7/8" plugs are available.
  • Removable extension neck: Various options including QuickNeck for tool-free insert removal.
  • Lagging: Provides space between the thermometer and process connection.
  • Process connection: Various threaded, flanged, and compression fittings.
  • Thermowell: Versions with and without thermowells, available in various diameters, materials, and tip types.
  • Insert: Features sensor models like iTHERM QuickSens (fastest response times) and iTHERM StrongSens (high vibration resistance). Available in RTD (wire wound or thin-film) or thermocouple types (K, J, or N).

Input

  • Measured variable: Temperature.
  • Measuring range: Varies by sensor type.
    • Pt100 thin-film (TF), basic: –50 to +200 °C (–58 to +392 °F)
    • Pt100 thin film (TF), standard: –50 to +400 °C (–58 to +752 °F)
    • Pt100 thin film (TF), iTHERM StrongSens: –50 to +500 °C (–58 to +932 °F)
    • Pt100 wire wound (WW), extended: –200 to +600 °C (–328 to +1,112 °F)
    • Thermocouple TC, type J: –40 to +750 °C (–40 to +1,382 °F)
    • Thermocouple TC, type K: –40 to +1,100 °C (–40 to +2,012 °F)
    • Thermocouple TC, type N: (Measuring range not specified in extract)

Output

The measured value can be transmitted directly-wired or via an Endress+Hauser iTEMP transmitter.

  • Output signal:
    • Analog output 4 to 20 mA, HART® (optional SIL transmitter).
    • PROFIBUS® PA, FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus™, PROFINET® with Ethernet-APL, IO-Link®.

Power supply

  • Sensor connection wires are equipped with terminal lugs with a nominal diameter of 1.3 mm (0.05 in).
  • Details on terminal assignment for RTD and thermocouple sensor connections are provided, along with diagrams for various head-mounted and field transmitters.

Performance characteristics

  • Maximum measurement error: Tolerances for RTD resistance thermometers as per IEC 60751 (Class B, A, AA) are specified. Permissible deviation limits for thermocouples as per IEC 60584 and ASTM E230/ANSI MC96.1 are also provided.
  • Response time: Typical values in seconds (s) for t50 and t90 are provided for various thermowell diameters, tip types, and sensor configurations when tested in water.
  • Calibration: Information on calibration methods (fixed-point, reference thermometer), evaluation services, and sensor-transmitter matching is included. Minimum immersion lengths for inserts required for calibration are specified.
  • Insulation resistance: RTD and TC insulation resistance values are provided.

Installation

  • Orientation: No restrictions, but self-draining should be considered.
  • Installation instructions: Guidance on ensuring adequate immersion length for accuracy, especially in pipes, is provided.
  • Ambient conditions:
    • Ambient temperature range:
      • Terminal head without transmitter: Depends on head, gland, or connector.
      • Terminal head with transmitter: –40 to +85 °C (–40 to +185 °F).
      • Terminal head with transmitter and display: –20 to +70 °C (–4 to +158 °F).
      • QuickNeck extension neck: –50 to +140 °C (–58 to +284 °F).
