Standard immersion lengths for TA571 and TA572 are also listed as 70 mm, 145 mm, 146 mm, 221 mm, and 222 mm.

Process

  • Process temperature range: For maximum operating temperatures, see the 'Material' section.
  • Process pressure: Maximum process pressure depends on process temperatures and maximum permitted flow velocity.
  • Permitted flow velocity: Diminishes with increasing immersion length and depends on thermowell shape/size, medium, temperature, and pressure.

Material

Thermowell, process connection

Recommended maximum temperatures for continuous use in air:

  • AISI 316/1.4401, AISI 316L/1.4404, 1.4435: 650 °C (1 202 °F)
  • AISI 316Ti/1.4571: 700 °C (1 292 °F)
  • AISI 321/1.4541: 650 °C (1 202 °F)

Properties of these materials include corrosion resistance, suitability for specific chemical environments, and resistance to intergranular corrosion. Maximum operating temperatures can be reduced by high mechanical load or aggressive media.

Mechanical construction

Thermowell dimensions

Dimensions vary by model (TA570, TA571, TA572) and include immersion length (U), extension (T), bottom thickness (D), tip diameter (⌀Q1, ⌀Q2), bore diameter (⌀F1), and extension diameter (⌀D1). Specific values depend on ordering information and customer specifications.

  • Immersion length (U): Examples include 150 mm (5.9 in), 225 mm (8.9 in), 270 mm (10.6 in), 400 mm (15.7 in), 100 mm (3.94 in), and customer-specific lengths.
  • Extension diameter (⌀D1): Ranges from 25 mm (0.98 in) to 49 mm (1.9 in) depending on the model.
  • Bore diameter (⌀F1): 7 mm (0.28 in) or 7 mm (0.28 in) / 8 mm (0.31 in).
  • Min. wall thickness: 3 mm (0.12 in).

Installation conditions

  • Orientation: No restrictions.
  • Installation instructions: For pipes with small cross-sections, the sensor tip should reach or slightly extend past the center line. In pipes, immersion length should ideally be half the pipe diameter. Angled installation is also an option.
  • Recommended minimum immersion length: 80 to 100 mm (3.15 to 3.94 in).
  • Immersion length: Should correspond to at least 8 times the thermowell diameter.
  • ATEX certification: Installation regulations must be observed.

Certificates and approvals

  • PED approval: Complies with paragraph 3.3 of the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC).

Test on thermowell

  • Pressure tests are in accordance with DIN 43772.
  • Dye penetration tests verify the absence of cracks on thermowell welding.
