Summary
Product Identification
The TU51, TU52, TU53, and TU54 are heavy-duty, general-purpose thermowells manufactured from drilled barstock material.
Application
These thermowells are designed for use with RTD and thermocouple assemblies, primarily in heavy-duty applications within process industries.
Key Features and Benefits
- Manufactured from round barstock, meeting industry standards.
- Available process connections include weld-in, socket weld, threaded, or flanged with double-sided standard or full penetration welds.
- Thermowell stem shapes can be straight, stepped, or tapered.
- Variable lag and immersion lengths are offered.
- CRN approved thermowells are available.
- Standard material of construction is 316/316L.
- Special versions can be manufactured according to specifications.

Material Specifications
| Material Name | Short Form | Recommended max. temperature for continuous use in air | Properties |
|---|---|---|---|
| AISI 316L | 1.4401 or X5CrNiMo17-12-2 | 650 °C (1202 °F) | Austenitic, stainless steel. High corrosion resistance in general. Particularly high corrosion resistance in chlorine-based and acidic, non-oxidizing atmospheres through the addition of molybdenum (e.g. phosphoric and sulfuric acids, acetic and tartaric acids with a low concentration). |
| 1.4404 / X2CrNiMo17-13-2 | AISI | 450 °C (842 °F) | Heat-resistant steel. Resistant in nitrogen-containing atmospheres and atmospheres that are low in oxygen; not suitable for acids or other aggressive media. Often used in steam generators, water and steam pipes, pressured vessels. |
| A105/1.0460 / C22.8 |
The temperatures for continuous operation are reference values for use in air without significant compressive load. Maximum operating temperatures are reduced under abnormal conditions such as high mechanical load or in aggressive media.
Installation
- Installation possibilities include pipes, tanks, or other plant components.
- A general rule of thumb is to design the insertion length to be 10 times the diameter of the thermowell.
- For accurate measurements, the sensor tip should reach or extend slightly past the centerline of the pipe, especially in laminar flow. Angled (tilted) installation is also a solution. Consider process conditions like flow velocity, viscosity, and process pressure when determining immersion length.
