Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: AmberSep™ IRC748 UPS Chelating Resin
  • Product Type: Industrial-grade, Uniform Particle Size, Chelant for Chemical Processing

Description

AmberSep™ IRC748 UPS is a macroporous, uniform particle size resin with a polystyrenic matrix crosslinked with divinylbenzene, containing iminodiacetic groups. These functional groups form complexes with metal ions. The resin is characterized by its narrow particle size distribution, offering an excellent pressure drop profile, resistance to osmotic shock, and high physical stability.

It provides high operating capacity for calcium and is particularly effective for treating brines with high strontium content, improving cycle times and offering good strontium removal efficiency with low metal leakage. The resin is also used in hydrometallurgical applications for metal recovery due to its high selectivity for heavy metal cations over alkali metal ions in various process and waste streams.

Applications:

  • Chlor-alkali (brine purification)
  • Electronics (printed wiring boards)
  • Electroplating
  • Process streams (trace metal removal)
  • Hydrometallurgy (recovery of heavy metals from leach streams)

Bed expansion as a function of backwash flowrate at 20°C (68°F) is shown in Figure 1. Pressure drop data as a function of service flowrate at 20°C and 60°C (68°F and 140°F) is shown in Figure 2. Pressure drop data are valid at the start of the service run with clean water.

Application Information

The selectivity of AmberSep™ IRC748 UPS Chelating Resin generally follows this order: Fe³⁺ > Hg²⁺ > Cu²⁺ > Pb²⁺ > Ni²⁺ > Zn²⁺ > Cd²⁺ > Co²⁺ > Fe²⁺ > Mn²⁺ > Ca²⁺ >> Na⁺.

The affinity for H⁺ at pH 4 is situated between Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺. For metals with selectivities less than Cu²⁺, the resin should be in the salt form (e.g., Na⁺ form) to minimize metal leakage. At pH 2, the resin is predominantly in the H⁺ form and efficiently removes only Fe³⁺, Hg²⁺, and Cu²⁺.

Recommended minimum pH values for various cation removals:

  • pH = 2: Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺, Hg²⁺
  • pH = 4: Hg²⁺, Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺, Ni²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, Ca²⁺
  • pH = 9: Ni²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Ca²⁺
