Drug Loading and Release
Batch equilibration is the preferred method for loading drugs. Conventional columnar operations are not suitable due to the fine particle size. The realized drug loading will be less than the theoretical anion exchange capacity. Loading efficiency is influenced by drug selectivity, concentration, competing anions, molecular weight, and swelling. Multiple equilibration stages may be needed for maximum loading.
Drug release in vivo is governed by diffusion rate through the polymer, resin selectivity, and electrolyte concentration.
