Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: LEWATIT® AF 5
  • Type: Microporous activated carbon like adsorber consisting of spherical beads derived from a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer.
  • Common Description: Neutral
  • Functional Group: None
  • Matrix: Carbon
  • Delivery Form: Black beads
  • Edition: 2017-07-03

Applications

LEWATIT® AF 5 is suitable for:

  • Water treatment: removal of trace amounts of organic substances such as chlorinated hydrocarbons, MTBE, organic phosphates, amines, pesticides and other metabolites.
  • Removal of organics from electroplating process streams.
  • Isolation of pharmaceutically active compounds.
  • Removal of acetic acid from brine.

Advantages over Activated Carbon

  • Regenerable without additional activation (elution usually with hot water or steam).
  • Narrow bead size distribution.
  • Excellent mechanical stability towards abrasion and attrition due to spherical shape.

Operating limits

  • Operating Temperature: max. 300 °C
  • Operating pH Range (during exhaustion): 0-14
  • Bed Depth (single column): min. 1000 mm
  • Max. Pressure Loss (during operation): 250 kPa

Physical and Chemical Properties

  • Range of size for >90 vol% of all beads: 0.4-0.8 mm
  • Bulk density: 550-650 g/L (+/- 5%)
  • Density: approx. 1.34 g/mL
  • Stability pH range: 0-14
  • Stability temperature range: 1-300 °C
  • Surface BET: approx. 1200 m²/g
  • Pore volume: approx. 0.15 cm³/g
  • Pore diameter: approx. 8 nm

Safety and Handling

  • Strong oxidants (e.g., nitric acid) can cause violent reactions.
  • Observe the Safety Data Sheet for product description, transport, storage, handling, safety, and ecology.
  • Store at temperatures above the freezing point of water, under roof, in dry conditions, and out of direct sunlight.
  • If frozen, allow to thaw gradually at ambient temperature before handling or use. Do not accelerate thawing.
  • Packaging stability is limited to 24 months under recommended storage conditions.

Disposal

  • In the European Community, dispose of ion exchange resins according to the European waste nomenclature.
