Summary

Product identification

Lewatit® S 1668 is a monodisperse, food grade, gel-type, strongly acidic cation exchange resin based on a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer.

Applications:

  • Softening of solutions, particularly for thin juices in the sugar and pectin industries.
  • Decationisation of solutions of organic products (e.g., sugar beet, sugar cane, starch sugar, glycerine, gelatine, whey, food acids).
  • Extraction of amino acids (e.g., lysine).

Special features of the resin bed:

  • High exchange flow rates during regeneration and loading.
  • Good utilization of total capacity.
  • Low sweeten-on, sweeten-off, and rinse water demand.
  • Homogeneous throughput of regenerants, water, and solutions, leading to a homogeneous working zone.
  • Nearly linear pressure drop gradient across the entire bed depth, allowing for operation with higher bed depths.

Operating limits

  • Stability pH range: 0-14
  • Stability temperature range: 1-120 °C
  • Operating temperature (max): 120 °C
  • Operating pH range during exhaustion: 0-14
  • Maximum pressure loss during operation: 200 kPa

Feed water

  • Bed depth for single column (min): 800 mm
  • Backwash bed expansion (at 20°C per m/h): 4 %
  • Specific flow rate (max): 20 BV/h
  • Freeboard during backwash (min): 80-100 vol. %

Product water

  • Optimized kinetics: Increased operating capacity compared to resins with heterodisperse bead size distribution.
  • High total capacity: Provides long running times with low leakage and economical regeneration amounts.

Additional Information & Regulations

  • Safety precautions: Strong oxidants (e.g., nitric acid) can cause violent reactions. Observe the safety data sheet.
  • Disposal: Must be disposed of according to European waste nomenclature.
  • Storage: Recommended to store above freezing point, under roof, dry, and out of direct sunlight. If frozen, allow to thaw gradually at ambient temperature. Packaging stability is limited to 24 months.
  • Start-up: For potable water and listed aqueous solutions, special care should be given to initial cycles. Recommended start-up conditions are available on request.
