Summary
Synthetic Adsorbents
Synthetic adsorbents are a series of products based on ion-exchange resin manufacturing technology, designed for use as solid extractants. They possess large surface area and fine pore structures, enabling effective adsorption of organic compounds from aqueous solutions.
Properties and Functionality
- Porous Structure: Similar to activated carbon, these adsorbents have internal fine pore structures suitable for solute diffusion.
- Molecular Sieving: Smaller solutes can diffuse into the particle, while molecules larger than the pore size cannot penetrate and are therefore not adsorbed.
- Chemical Structures: Three types are available: aromatic, modified aromatic, and methacrylic series. The chemical structure influences the hydrophobicity of the adsorbent, which is critical for selecting the appropriate type based on the target compound's chemical nature.
- Particle Size: Standard synthetic adsorbents typically have a mean particle diameter of approximately 0.5 mm, suitable for most industrial-scale processes.
Product Examples
- SEPABEADS™ SP207: A modified polystyrenic adsorbent with a strongly hydrophobic matrix (chemically brominated aromatic rings).
- Specific Gravity: 1.2
- Suitable for batchwise or upflow operations.
- Can adsorb relatively hydrophilic compounds due to its hydrophobic matrix.
- SEPABEADS™ SP70: A divinylbenzene copolymer, compliant with FDA requirements for secondary direct food additive (CFR173.65).
- Features medium-sized pores.
- Suitable for adsorbing small natural compounds such as naringin, limonin, and hesperidin.
- DIAION™ HP2MG: Possesses a polymethacrylic structure, exhibiting less hydrophobicity compared to polystyrenic adsorbents.
