Summary
Product identification
DIAION UBK Series Cation Exchange Resins
General Description
Resins with sulfonic acid (-SO₃H) as the functional group exhibit strong acidity and can exchange positive ions such as Na⁺ and Ca²⁺.
Strong Acid Cation Exchange Resins (SACERs)
- Can exchange cations in all pH ranges.
- Relatively stable at high temperatures (100-120°C).
- Applications include water treatment, purification of food and pharmaceuticals, and as reaction catalysts.
- The sulfonic acid group (-SO₃H) is strongly acidic and dissociates to -SO₃⁻ and H⁺.
- Ion exchange reactions involve the exchange of counter ions (H⁺ in this case).
- Can exchange counter ions with neutral salts as well as bases.
Regeneration
Regeneration is required to restore the resins to their original R-SO₃H form after use. This is typically performed using hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid aqueous solutions.
Example Regeneration (Counter cation Na⁺):
