Summary

Purolite® Resins for Potable and Ground Water Treatment

This bulletin describes Purolite ion exchange resins and adsorbent solutions for potable and ground water treatment. Increasing regulatory controls for contaminants such as arsenic, perchlorate, uranium, disinfection byproducts (DBP), and naturally occurring organic matter (TOC) have led to the development of specialized resins.

Specific Contaminant Treatment Applications

  • Arsenic Removal: FerrIX™ A33E uses iron oxide to complex with arsenic (As⁺⁵ or As⁺³), reducing levels typically to < 2 ppb. NSF/ANSI 61 certified. For brine regeneration, A300E or A200E are recommended for pentavalent arsenic, with pre-oxidation of trivalent arsenic suggested.
  • Organics - Disinfection Byproducts (DBP) Control / TOC / Color / Tannin Removal: Brine regenerable anion resins such as acrylic (A860, A850) and styrenic (A500P) SBAs are available. TANEX, a proprietary blend, is recommended for colloidal and dissolved TOC.
  • Nitrate Removal: Purolite A520E is a nitrate-selective resin. A300E or A200E (Type II SBA) may offer better economics in low sulfate waters. A400E and A600E (Type I SBA) can also be used. The WIN process, using weak base anion resin technology, is an alternative for reduced waste volume.
  • Perchlorate Removal: Resins include A532E (single use), A530E (single use or regenerable), A520E (single use or regenerable), and A850 (brine regenerable). Bifunctionalized resins A532E and A530E offer high selectivity for perchlorate and pertechnetate. The WIP process uses regenerable weak base anion resin technology for higher perchlorate levels and simultaneous removal of other oxyanions.
  • Barium / Radium / Strontium Removal: Purolite SST60 and SST80 shell-core strong acid cation resins are recommended due to their resistance to fouling from precipitated salts, offering more efficient elution and reduced operating costs compared to standard SAC resins.
  • Uranium Removal: Strong base anion resins exhibit high selectivity. Recommended products include A300E, A200E, A400E, A600E, and A850. Both brine regeneration and single-use options are available, with careful adherence to regulatory requirements for handling and disposal of spent media.

Multi-contaminant Removal

Purolite offers solutions for simultaneous removal of multiple contaminants (e.g., nitrate and arsenic, nitrate and uranium, arsenic, TOC, and perchlorate) using single-use or regenerable resins, potentially reducing footprint, capital, and operating costs.

Membrane Protection Resins

  • MPR1000: A brine regenerable proprietary blend designed to reduce Silt Density Index (SDI) and TOC, improving membrane operating efficiency and recovery rates.
  • SST60: A shell-core SAC resin used to remove divalent cations like barium and iron. It can be regenerated with RO reject brine using the Cyclic Ion Exchange (CIX) process, offering a "green technology" approach with minimal environmental impact and potential for high permeate water recovery rates.
