Hydraulic Characteristics
Backwash
- During up-flow backwash, the resin bed should be expanded between 50 and 70% for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
- This operation frees particulate matter, clears the bed of bubbles and voids, and reclassifies resin particles.
- Approximately 30 minutes of expansion is usually sufficient when first putting into service.
- Bed expansion increases with flow rate and decreases with influent fluid temperature.
- Caution is required to avoid resin loss through the top of the vessel by over-expansion.
Pressure Drop
- Pressure drop depends on particle size distribution, bed depth, voids volume, flow rate, and influent solution viscosity.
- Factors such as filtered particulate matter, abnormal resin compressibility, or incomplete bed classification can increase head loss.
- Service flow rates may vary from 10 to 40 BV/h depending on water quality, application, and plant design.
Systems
- Coflow regenerated systems
