Hydraulic Characteristics
Backwash
During up-flow backwash, the resin bed should be expanded between 50 and 70% for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Proper bed expansion helps remove particulate matter, clear bubbles and voids, and reclassify resin particles, minimizing flow resistance. Initial service startup may require approximately 30 minutes of expansion for bed classification. Bed expansion is influenced by flow rate and influent fluid temperature. Caution is advised to prevent resin loss due to over-expansion.
Pressure Drop
The pressure drop across an ion exchange resin bed is dependent on particle size distribution, bed depth, void volume, flow rate, and influent solution viscosity. Factors such as filtered particulate matter, abnormal resin compressibility, or incomplete bed classification can lead to increased head loss. Service flow rates can range from 10 to 40 BV/h, depending on influent water quality, application, and plant design.
