General Description

Purolite C104 is a gel-type polyacrylic weak acid cation exchanger. Its carboxylic functional groups provide high chemical efficiency, particularly for removing bicarbonate alkalinity in water treatment with good exchange rates. It is primarily used for water dealkalization and softening, which can reduce the ionic load on subsequent strong acid resin beds. Due to its lower density compared to conventional strong acid resins, Purolite C104 is suitable for layered beds (Doublite) that can be efficiently regenerated using upflow countercurrent techniques. The resin has also been employed for selectively recovering transition metals from aqueous solutions. It is insoluble in acids, alkalies, and common solvents. Its outstanding physical characteristics may allow its use in applications where a macroporous resin might otherwise be considered. Purolite C104 can be operated successfully at relatively high temperatures, for example, in sugar treatment. However, the macroporous polyacrylic weak acid cation exchanger Purolite C106 is generally recommended for applications requiring operation between acidic and highly-swollen alkali salt forms, such as the treatment of ammoniacal condensate waters or high solids softening. Weakly acidic cation resins are increasingly used in specialized applications, including wastewater treatment to reduce environmental pollution.
