Hydraulic Characteristics
Backwash
- During up-flow backwash, the resin bed should be expanded between 50% and 70% for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
- This operation frees particulate matter, clears bubbles and voids, and reclassifies resin particles.
- Initial service classification may require approximately 30 minutes of expansion.
- Bed expansion increases with flow rate and decreases with influent fluid temperature.
- Caution required to avoid resin loss through the top of the vessel by over-expansion.
Pressure Drop
- The pressure drop across the resin bed depends on particle size distribution, bed depth, voids volume, flow rate, and influent viscosity.
- Factors affecting these parameters (e.g., filtered particulate matter, abnormal resin compressibility, incomplete bed classification) can adversely affect head loss.
- Service flow rates may vary from 10 to 40 BV/h, depending on influent water quality, application, and plant design.
