Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: PUROLITE® S920
  • Product Type: Chelation Resin

Application

Purolite S920 is a macroporous polystyrenic based chelating resin with thiouronium groups. It is designed for:

  • Selective removal of mercury from industrial effluents.
  • Recovery of precious metals (gold, platinum, palladium) from industrial effluents.
  • Treatment of waste streams to reduce soluble mercury salt concentrations.
  • Recovery of precious metals from rinse waters in the galvanic and electronic industries.
  • Separation of precious metals from acid liquors in hydrometallurgy.

The resin forms highly stable complexes with mercury, exhibiting high selective affinity compared to other heavy metals. These properties are largely unaffected by high chloride or sulphate content.

Performance

  • Mercury Removal: Effluent solutions typically containing 2-20 ppm of mercury can be treated to reduce concentrations to less than 0.005 ppm.
  • Loading Capacity:
    • Mercury: up to 200 g/l
    • Gold: up to 200 g/l
    • Platinum or Palladium: approximately 60 g/l
  • Run Lengths: Thousands of hours are possible, making regeneration for reuse generally not considered economic.

Operating limits

  • Temperature Limit (H⁺ form): 80 °C (176 °F)
  • pH Limits (Stability): 0-10
  • pH Limits (Operating): 1-10

Feed water

  • Designed for low concentrations of soluble mercury salts.
  • Properties are largely unaffected by high chloride or sulphate content.
  • Removal of free chlorine and other strong oxidizing agents by filtering through activated carbon is recommended to prevent resin damage.

Product water

  • Can reduce mercury concentration to less than 0.005 ppm.

Mechanical / hydraulic

  • Polymer Structure: Macroporous crosslinked polymer
  • Functional Group: Thiouronium
  • Appearance: Spherical beads
  • Ionic form as shipped: H⁺
  • Moisture Retention (H⁺): 48-54 %
  • Mean Size Typical: 0.60-0.85 mm
  • Uniformity Coefficient (max.): 1.70
  • Swelling (H⁺ → Hgmax): 5 %
  • Specific Gravity: 1.11 g/ml
  • Shipping Weight (approx.): 700-735 g/l
