Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: AMBERLITE™ IRN99 Resin
  • Product Type: Nuclear Grade High Capacity Gel Cation Exchange Resin for the Power Industry
  • Manufacturer: Rohm & Haas (Dow)

Description

AMBERLITE™ IRN99 Resin is a nuclear-grade, gel-type, strong acid cation exchange resin designed for nuclear power applications demanding high effluent purity, operating capacity, and resin life. It is supplied in the fully regenerated Hydrogen form and is intended for use in non-regenerable single or mixed bed nuclear systems. The particle size is optimized for a balance of pressure drop, exchange kinetics, and resistance to separation from AMBERLITE IRN78 anion exchange resin when used in mixed beds.

Key features include:

  • High capacity and oxidative stability.
  • Suitable for BWR condensate polishing to achieve low reactor water sulfate levels.
  • High DVB crosslinker level provides excellent oxidative stability, minimizing sulfonic acid leachable release.
  • Particle size reduces cation resin layer separation in mixed beds.
  • High total capacity (typically 2.5 eq/L) increases operating throughput by 15–30%.
  • Minimizes rad waste disposal costs and volume due to high capacity and long bed life.
  • Reduces work, resin handling, and potential radiation exposure through fewer bed change-outs.

Applications include:

  • BWR condensate polishing
  • PWR steam generator blowdown treatment
  • PWR primary system CVCS resin beds
  • Radioactive waste demineralizers

Hydraulic Characteristics

Pressure drop data for AMBERLITE™ IRN99 Resin as a single component resin are available in Figure 1 of the original document, as a function of service flow rate and water temperature. Pressure drop for a mixed bed can be approximated by summing the component pressure drops.
