Summary
Product identification
The Armstrong Series 4600 is a Horizontal Split Case (HSC) Pump designed for HVAC and industrial applications. It is a single-stage, double-suction type centrifugal pump.
Operating limits
The pump's pressure and temperature parameters vary based on casing and flange ratings:
- Cast Iron Casing - ANSI 125 flanges:
- Temperature: 300 °F (150 °C)
- Pressure: 175 psig (12 bar)
- Cast Iron Casing - ANSI 250 flanges:
- Temperature: 300 °F (150 °C)
- Pressure: 300 psig (20.00 bar)
Various types of mechanical seals and packed glands are available to extend standard pressure and temperature parameters. Contact the factory for higher temperature or pressure requirements. Pumps are hydrostatically tested to 150% of the maximum pump working pressure.
Feed water
- Abrasives separation is available as an option for external seal/packing recirculation lines.
- Seal flush lines can be equipped with a 50-micron cartridge filter and sight flow indicator.
- For pumps with differential pressures exceeding 30 psig / 2 bars, a cyclone type sediment separator with a sight flow indicator can be supplied in each flush line to the mechanical seal.
Electrical
Motor horsepower ratings are minimum acceptable and sized for continuous operation without exceeding full load nameplate rating over the entire pump curve, exclusive of motor service factor.
Mechanical / hydraulic
The Series 4600 pump features a Tilted Parting Design Casing (15° angle) to permit laminar approach to the impeller eye, resulting in lower NPSH required, a lower pump profile, and minimum pump footprint. The rotating element can be removed without disturbing piping.
Standard Materials of Construction:
- Casing: Cast iron - class 30
- Impeller: Bronze - alloy 844
- Wear Ring: Bronze - alloy 936
- Shaft: Carbon steel - C1045
- Shaft Sleeve: Stainless steel - 304
- Mechanical Seal: Sintered silicon carbide/carbon, Stainless steel - 304
- Bearings: Grease lubricated
Key Features:
- Casing: Axially split, with suction and discharge connections located in the lower casing. Connections are flanged and drilled/tapped for gauge connections, on the same elevation.
- Wearing Rings: Replaceable bronze casing wear rings are fitted; impeller wear rings are available as an option.
- Impeller: Bronze, double suction, fully enclosed, hydraulically and dynamically balanced for minimum axial thrust and high efficiency.
- Shaft: Carbon steel, designed for minimum deflection and vibration, with identical shaft and parts for left and right hand drives.
- Shaft Sealing:
- Unique cartridge design with an industry-standard mechanical seal.
- Mechanical seal, shaft sleeve, and seal plate form a single cartridge-style assembly, easily removable for service without special tools or adjustments.
- Seal components are stainless steel with carbon vs silicone carbide faces and EPDM secondary seals.
- Seal plates include factory-installed flush lines.
- Packed glands are available as an alternative.
- Bearings: Dust-tight, deep groove ball bearings with permanently sealed grease lubrication for extended, maintenance-free life. Mounted in cartridge-type housings, easily removable with a bearing nut without opening the pump casing or requiring special tools.
- Coupling: Flexible coupling is standard. An optional 3½” spacer coupling allows mechanical seal replacement without disturbing the motor.
- Leakage Containment: Fitted with a drain connection.
- Mounting: Pump and motor are factory-mounted and aligned on a common fabricated steel baseplate with an OSHA guard. Final alignment is to be made on-site after installation and reaching operating temperature.
