Product identification

The Goulds 3185 is a heavy-duty process pump, specifically designed as a Paper Stock / Process Pump, featuring Patented Intelligent Monitoring.

Key design standards and features include:

  • Built to ANSI standards.
  • ISO 16 bar flange drilling.
  • mm-dimensioned OD of mechanical seal sleeve.
  • mm-dimensioned bearing locknut.
  • mm-dimensioned shaft and keyway at coupling.

Operating limits

  • Capacities: to 10,220 m³/h (45,000 GPM)
  • Heads: to 125 m (410 feet)
  • Temperatures: to 230° C (446° F)
  • Pressures: to 16 bar (232 PSIG)
  • Bearing Temperature (average): 50° C (120° F)
  • Bearing Design Life: >100,000 hours

Temperature Limits by Lubrication Type:

  • Grease Lube: 148.9° C
  • Oil Lube without cooling: 229.4° C
  • Oil Lube with cooling: 229.4° C

Pressure Limits:

  • Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP): See Pressure Temperature Chart in document 723.9A104 for specific values.
  • Hydrotest Pressure: 1.5 x MAWP (Note: Hydrotest pressures for assembled pumps with mechanical seals may be tested at lower pressure depending on the allowable hydrotest limit of the mechanical seal.)

Feed water

The Goulds 3185 is engineered for tough process pumping applications, including:

  • Paper stock (guaranteed to operate on 6% paper stock without flush water).
  • Slurries and stringy fibers.
  • Difficult recycle services.
  • Services with solids and vapor.
  • Digester recirculation.
  • Make-up liquor.
  • White liquor.
  • Black liquor.
  • High pressure / high temperature pulp mill services.
  • Hot oil.

Mechanical / hydraulic

General Design:

  • Top centerline discharge for air handling and self-venting.
  • Special volute design reduces radial loads.
  • Back pull-out design for one-craft maintenance.
  • Foot-mounted casing.
  • Renewable suction sideplate, positively sealed with O-ring and gasket.
  • Heavy-duty shaft designed for minimum deflection; dry shaft achieved by O-rings at sleeve and impeller nut.
  • Rigid feet maintain driver alignment with high pipe loads and absorb system vibration.
  • Clamped sideplate for maximum reliability and zero leakage.
  • Minimum hydraulic loads for maximum mechanical reliability.
  • Hydraulic Coverage: Line designed for full 50 Hz / 60 Hz performance.

Impeller Options:

  • Open Impeller: Suitable for most services, offers resistance to wear and corrosion, allows for easily renewable clearances. Features full back shroud, thick vanes for slurries and stringy fibers, large balance holes, and back pump-out vanes to minimize stuffing box pressure and axial thrust.
  • Enclosed Impeller: Available for services where efficiency is a consideration and enclosed design is suitable. Efficiency can be renewed with axial adjustment and/or wear ring replacement. Beneficial for high-temperature services as it allows the suction sideplate to be eliminated.
  • Shearpeller™ Design: Patented design (#6,609,890) for clog-free pumping in recycle mills with plastics and tape. Features generous front clearance with vortex-type design, patented tapered inlet sleeve to prevent plugging, and a loose sleeve that rotates independently.

Sealing Flexibility:

  • Choice of mechanical seal, packed box, or dynamic seal.
  • Patented TaperBore™ PLUS Seal Chamber: Improves lubrication and heat removal (cooling) of seal faces for extended seal life and pump uptime. Features a patented Vane Particle Ejector to direct solids and efficiently remove air/vapors away from the mechanical seal.
  • Dynamic Seal Option: Ideally suited for tough applications where conventional seals or packing require external flush. A repeller pumps liquid from the stuffing box while running, and a diaphragm seal prevents leakage when the pump is not operating. Eliminates external seal water, pumpage contamination, and associated piping costs.

Bearings:

  • Thrust Bearing: Duplex Angular Contact (e.g., 7311 BECBY to 7318 BECBY depending on group size).
  • Radial Bearing: Cylindrical Roller (S, M, L, XL groups: e.g., NUP311 ECP to NUP317 ECP); Single Row Deep Groove (XLT, SL2-S, XL2 groups).
  • Standard labyrinth oil seals prevent lubricant contamination and loss.

Stuffing Box Dimensions (mm):

  • Packed Box:
    • Bore: 85 (S Group) to 120 (XL Group)
    • Depth: 85 (S, M Groups) to 90 (L, XL Groups)
    • Packing Size: 12.5 x 12.5 (all groups)
    • Number of Packing Rings: 5 (all groups)
    • Width of Lantern Ring: 16 (S, M Groups) to 19 (L, XL Groups)
  • Mechanical Seal:
    • Bore: 85.6 (S Group) to 127 (XL Group)
    • Depth to VPE Ring: 46 (S Group) to 61 (M Group)
    • Distance to 1st Obstruction: 73 (S Group) to 101 (XL Group)

Shaft Dimensions (mm):
