Summary

Product Identification

The Goulds Model VIC is a Vertical Industrial Can-Type Pump, part of the Goulds Vertical Turbine Pumps line, which includes models VIT, VIC, and VIS. These models share a common hydraulic design for the pump bowl assembly.

Operating Limits

  • Flows: Up to 70,000 GPM (15,900 m³/Hr)
  • Heads: Up to 2,000 feet (610 m)
  • Pressures: Up to 1,000 PSI (70 kg/cm²)
  • Bowl Sizes: From 6" to 42" (150 mm to 1,050 mm)
  • Temperatures: Up to 450° F (232° C)
  • Horsepower: Up to 10,000 HP (7,460 kW)

Feed Water

The pump is designed for efficient operation at any Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHA). Alloy construction is available for corrosive and abrasive services.

Typical Services

  • Pipeline Booster
  • Product Transfer (Refinery Blending)
  • Injection Secondary Recovery
  • Chemical Transfer
  • Boiler Feed
  • Condensate
  • Cryogenics
  • LNG Transfer
  • Light Hydrocarbons
  • Water Services

Mechanical / Hydraulic

Design Advantages

  • Fabricated discharge head and flanged column.
  • Flanged bowl construction.
  • 416 SS shafting.
  • In-line suction and discharge simplifies installation.
  • Optional suction in can for site piping flexibility.
  • Inherent design features allow efficient operation at any NPSH available.
  • Alloy construction for corrosive/abrasive services.

Pump Bowl Assembly Features

  • Suction Bell: Allows smooth liquid entry, minimizes foundation opening.
  • Suction Bell Bearing: Provides shaft stability.
  • Sand Collar: Prevents solids from entering suction bearing.
  • Impeller: Semi-open or enclosed for appropriate service; keyed impellers standard for API applications, 18" and larger sizes, and for temperatures above 180° F (82° C) or cryogenic services.
  • Pump Shaft: Heavy duty 416 SS standard; other alloys available.
  • Flanged Bowls: Registered fits ensure positive alignment and ease of maintenance.
  • Diffuser Bowl: Available in a variety of cast materials.
  • Sleeve Type Bearing: Provided at each stage for stable operation.

Pump Bowl Assembly Options

  • Choice of Semi-Open or Enclosed Impellers (alloy construction for corrosive/abrasive services).
  • Hardfacing & Rifle Drilled Shaft for wear protection.
  • Dual Wear Rings for enclosed impellers and bowls, allowing re-establishment of initial running clearances and efficiency.
  • Basket strainers available for protection from large solids.
  • First Stage-Low NPSH X Impeller or Double Suction for low NPSHA applications.
  • Hydraulic Balanced Impeller (optional dynamic balance to ISO Grade 1.0 (4 w/n)).

Column and Lineshaft Options

  • Flanged Column / Open Lineshaft Bearing: Product lubricated, recommended for ease of maintenance; renewable shaft sleeve or hard facing available.
  • Threaded Lineshaft Coupling: Commonly used for lower horsepower pumps, more economical.
  • Enclosed Lineshaft: Lineshaft protected by water flushing (for corrosive/abrasive services) or oil lubricated (for long settings).
  • Keyed Lineshaft Coupling: Recommended for motors larger than 700 HP, provides ease of maintenance.

Discharge Heads

The VIC can be supplied with the pump suction in the can. The discharge head changes flow direction, couples the pump to piping, and supports/aligns the driver.

Seals & Couplings

  • Adjustable Coupling (Type A): For vertical solid shaft drivers, impeller adjustment via coupling plate.
  • Adjustable Spacer Coupling (Type AS): Similar to Type A, with a spacer for mechanical seal maintenance without driver removal.
  • Packed Box: Usable when packing lubrication leakage is tolerated and discharge pressure does not exceed 100 PSI; optional headshaft sleeve or shaft hardfacing.
  • Water Flush or Oil Lubricated Enclosed Lineshaft: Water flush connection supplied for pressurized water into enclosing tube for bearing protection on abrasive services.
  • Single Seal: Most popular for low to medium pressures, cartridge style.
  • Dual Seals: Two in-line seals; chamber between seals can be filled with a buffer liquid and fitted with a pressure-sensitive annunciating device.

Typical Markets Served

  • Power Generation
  • Chemical
  • Mining
  • General Industry
