Summary

Product identification

Grundfos Hydro Multi-E booster systems are designed for the transfer and pressure boosting of clean water. These systems consist of two or three Grundfos CRE, CRIE, CME-A, or CME-I pumps connected in parallel and mounted on a common base frame with all necessary fittings.

Typical applications include:

  • Blocks of flats
  • Hotels
  • Industry
  • Hospitals
  • Schools

The Hydro Multi-E is supplied factory-tested and ready for operation, including a pressure switch for dry-running protection as standard.

Operating limits

  • Liquid temperature: 0 °C to +60 °C
  • Ambient temperature: 0 °C to +40 °C
  • Minimum inlet pressure:
    • For Hydro Multi-E with CRE pumps, the minimum inlet pressure H (in metres head) required to avoid cavitation is calculated as: H = pb x 10.2 - NPSH - Hf - Hv - Hs.
      • pb = Barometric pressure in bar (can be set to 1 bar; in closed systems, pb indicates system pressure in bar).
      • NPSH = Net Positive Suction Head in metres head (read from NPSH curve at highest flow).
      • Hf = Friction loss in suction manifold in metres head (at highest flow).
      • Hv = Vapour pressure in metres head.
      • Hs = Safety margin of min. 0.5 metres head.
    • For Hydro Multi-E with CME pumps, a positive inlet pressure is always required during both start-up and operation.
  • Maximum inlet pressure:
    • All pumps, with the exception of specific models listed below, are constructed to handle an inlet pressure corresponding to the maximum operating pressure.
    • Specific pump types with maximum inlet pressure limits:
      • Maximum 8 bar: CR(I)E 10-3, CR(I)E 3-15, CR(I)E 10-4, CR(I)E 5-16, CR(I)E 10-6, CR(I)E 10-9, CR(I)E 15-2, CR(I)E 15-7, CR(I)E 15-3, CR(I)E 20-2, CR(I)E 20-3, CME-I 5-6, CME-I 5-8.
      • Maximum 10 bar: CR(I)E 1-15, CR(I)E 3-15, CR(I)E 5-16, CR(I)E 10-9, CR(I)E 15-7.
  • Maximum operating pressure:
    • The maximum operating pressure of Hydro Multi-E is generally 10 bar.
    • For systems with CR(I)E 1-15, CR(I)E 3-15, CR(I)E 5-16, CR(I)E 10-9, CR(I)E 15-7 pumps, the maximum operating pressure is 16 bar.
    • The total of inlet pressure and the pressure when the pump is running against a closed valve must not exceed the maximum system pressure.

Feed water

  • Designed for clean water.
  • Performance measurements are conducted at a water temperature of 20 °C using pure water.
  • Kinematic viscosity: 1 mm²/s (1 cSt).
  • Water density: 1000 kg/m³.

Product water

  • The system is designed for constant-pressure control, maintaining a preset pressure after the booster system regardless of flow.
  • Speed-controlled pumps adjust their performance to deliver the correct pressure at the required flow.

Electrical

  • Enclosure class: IP54
  • Insulation class: F
  • Motor efficiency:
    • All three-phase motors are efficiency class IE2 or better.
    • CRE and CRIE pumps with three-phase motors are IE3-compliant.
    • IE3 motors comply with EISA2007 legislation and are ahead of EC requirements laid down by the EuP Directive.
  • Installation requirements:
    • The Hydro Multi-E must be correctly earthed.
    • 4.0 to 5.5 kW motors require especially reliable/sturdy earth connections due to an earth leakage current above 3.5 mA.
    • No external motor protection is required; the motor incorporates thermal protection against slow overloading and blocking (IEC 34-11: TP 211).
    • When switched on via the mains, the pump will start after approximately 5 seconds.
    • The number of starts and stops via the mains supply must not exceed 4 times per hour.

Mechanical / hydraulic

  • The Hydro Multi-E is mounted on a common base frame.
  • Fittings on the suction side:
    • Suction manifold
    • Isolating valve
    • Pressure switch for dry-running protection
  • Fittings on the discharge side:
    • Non-return valve
    • Isolating valve
    • Pressure gauge
    • Pressure transmitter
    • Diaphragm tank
    • Stainless-steel discharge manifold
  • Manifold materials:
    • For systems with CRE, CRIE, or CME-I pumps: Stainless steel (EN/DIN 1.4401 or EN/DIN 1.4571).
    • For systems with CME-A pumps: Electro-galvanised steel.
  • Diaphragm tank:
    • Precharge pressure = 0.7 x setpoint.
    • Precharge pressure must be measured in a pressureless system.
    • Nitrogen is recommended for refilling the tank.
  • Installation:
    • Must be installed in a well-ventilated room to ensure sufficient cooling of the pumps; not suitable for outdoor installation.
    • Sufficient clearance around the system for operator access.
    • Cooling air temperature must not exceed 40 °C.
    • Motor cooling fins, holes in fan cover, and fan blades must be kept clean.
    • Connected pipes must be of adequate size.
    • Expansion joints are recommended in the suction and discharge manifolds to avoid resonance.
    • Pipe supports are recommended on both the suction and discharge sides.
    • The booster system should be positioned on an even and solid surface (e.g., concrete floor or foundation). If not fitted with vibration dampers, it must be bolted to the floor or foundation.
  • Performance range: The systems offer a wide range of flow rates and heads, depending on the specific pump type and the number of pumps (1, 2, or 3). See the official PDF for exact tabulated values and performance curves.

Control and Monitoring

  • Control options:
    • Building management system (via LON, PROFIBUS, Modbus, BACnet, or wireless communication via GSM/GPRS or SMS)
    • Grundfos R100 remote control (via infrared light)
    • Control panel on the pump terminal box
    • External control systems (GSM or GRM)
  • Control modes:
    • Constant-pressure mode: maintains a preset pressure after the booster system, irrespective of the flow.
    • Automatically calculates the optimum number of running pumps and cuts pumps in or out to meet flow requirements efficiently.
  • Functions (settable/readable via control panel, R100, or building management system):
    • Setpoint
    • Start/stop
    • Max. curve
    • Control mode (via R100)
    • PI-controller (via R100)
    • Stop function (via R100)
    • Operating indication
    • Fault indication
    • Pump status (via R100)
    • External fault signal (digital input, factory-set to external fault, active in closed condition, used for dry-running protection).
    • Signal relay output.
  • Low-flow detection:
    • The system checks flow by temporarily reducing pump speed and observing pressure change.
    • If low flow is detected, speed increases until the stop pressure (actual setpoint +0.5 x ΔH) is reached, and the pump stops.
    • The pump restarts when the pressure falls to the start pressure (actual setpoint -0.5 x ΔH).
    • ΔH (the difference between start and stop pressures) is factory-set to 10% of the actual setpoint and can be adjusted from 5% to 30%.
