Sulzer ABS Piranha submersible grinder pumps are designed with an effective cutting system for pressure sewer systems. The product line includes:
- Piranha PE series: Equipped with Premium Efficiency IE3 Motors (IEC 60034-20).
- Piranha S series: Standard range with water-tight, fully encapsulated, flood-proof motors.
- Piranha S series (High Head): Standard range with water-tight, fully encapsulated, flood-proof motors and a two-stage pump for high head applications.

Mechanical / Hydraulic
- Cutting System:
- PE and S series: Features a lobed rotor cutting element attached to a centrifugal impeller, working in tandem with a stationary cutting element fastened to a spiral-grooved bottom plate. The lobed rotor turns inside a stationary cutter designed with wave-shaped castellations.
- S series (High Head): Features a two-blade, two-stage, primary cutting element attached to the first-stage centrifugal impeller, working in tandem with a stationary cutting element fastened to an adjustable bottom plate. The second stage further shears particles to a very fine pulp.
- Installation Configurations:
- Fixed installations with pedestal (guide rail assembly)
- Freestanding, transportable applications
- Installation in areas where large fluctuations in terrain elevation are present
- Discharge: Small diameter discharges (DN32/1-1/4” threaded and DN50/2” flanged).

- Motor housing, volute, impeller, bottom plate: Cast iron EN-GJL-250 (ASTM A-48, Class 35B)
- Rotor shaft: Stainless steel 1.4021 (AISI 420)
- Fasteners: Stainless steel 1.4401 (AISI 316)
- Mechanical seal: Silicon carbide
- Rotating and stationary cutters: Stainless steel 1.4528 (AISI 440B+Co), 58-62 HRC
- Shaft Sealing:
- PE series: Double mechanical seals, Silicon carbide/silicon carbide (SiC/SiC) provides maximum resistance from abrasives and chemical resistance in wastewater and most other industrial applications. Includes a seal protection system.
- S series & S series (High Head): High quality SiC/SiC mechanical seal. Motor-side sealing provided by an oil lubricated lip seal arrangement.
- Seal leak detection system: Provides advanced warning for seal repair prior to water entering the motor (not available for Piranha 09).
- Bearings: The stainless steel motor shaft is supported by lubricated-for-life, heavy-duty, ball bearings.
- Adjustable Bottom Plate: Allows for easy restoration of optimum clearance between the bottom plate and impeller to counter the effects of wearing and to maintain efficiency.
Electrical
- Motor:
- PE series: Premium Efficiency Motor (IE3) in accordance with IEC 60034-30.
- S series & S series (High Head): Water-tight, fully encapsulated, flood-proof motors.
- Cable Plug:
- PE series: Connection between the cable and motor is by means of an integrated 10-pole, quick disconnect, terminal block.
- S series & S series (High Head): Connection between the cable and motor is by means of an integrated pin-style, Easy-Fit terminal block (non-EX/FM models for S series).
- Temperature Monitoring: Thermal sensors are embedded in the stator windings and can be used to shut the pump off in case of overheating and automatically switch back on once cooled.
- Built-in Capacitor: Available on Piranha 08 and 09 models (S series), which does not require a control box.
