Summary

Product identification

The DOW FILMTEC BW30FR-365 is a fouling resistant reverse osmosis (RO) element designed for high biofouling feed waters, used in both potable and non-potable water applications.

Key features include:

  • A wide (34 mil) feed spacer to facilitate improved cleaning.
  • A proprietary modification to the FT30 membrane chemistry providing superior cleanability and resistance to fouling.
  • DOW FILMTEC membrane with one of the widest pH cleaning ranges in the industry (pH 1-13).
  • Efficient membrane element design with more, shorter membrane leaves to help reduce the overall effect of fouling.

It helps reduce operating costs by lowering membrane fouling, reducing average system operating pressure, and extending membrane life. The product part number is 174961.

Product specifications

  • Active area: 365 ft² (34 m²)
  • Permeate flow rate: 9,500 gpd (36 m³/d)
    • Note: Permeate flow and salt rejection are based on 2,000 ppm NaCl, 225 psi (15.3 bar), 77°F (25°C), pH 8 and 15% recovery. Flow rates for individual elements may vary but will be no more than 15% below the value shown.
  • Stabilized salt rejection: 99.5%
  • Minimum salt rejection: 99.0%

Operating limits

  • Membrane Type: Polyamide Thin-Film Composite
  • Maximum Operating Temperature: 113°F (45°C)
    • Note: Maximum temperature for continuous operation above pH 10 is 95°F (35°C).
  • Maximum Operating Pressure: 600 psig (41 bar)
  • Maximum Pressure Drop (per element): 15 psig (1.0 bar)
  • pH Range, Continuous Operation: 2 - 11
  • pH Range, Short-Term Cleaning (30 min.): 1 - 13
  • Maximum Feed Flow: 70 gpm (16 m³/h)
  • Maximum Feed Silt Density Index: SDI 5
  • Free Chlorine Tolerance: <0.1 ppm
    • Note: Removal of residual free chlorine by pretreatment is recommended.

Mechanical / hydraulic

  • Dimensions (approximate):
    • A (Length): 40.0 inches (1016 mm)
    • B (Permeate tube O.D.): 1.125 inches (29 mm)
    • C (Element O.D.): 7.9 inches (201 mm)
  • Feed spacer thickness: 34 mil
  • Fits nominal 8-inch (203 mm) I.D. pressure vessel.
  • Maximum pressure drop across an entire pressure vessel (housing): 50 psi (3.4 bar)

Operation and Maintenance Notes

  • Keep elements moist at all times after initial wetting.
  • Avoid any abrupt pressure or cross-flow variations on the spiral elements during start-up, shutdown, cleaning, or other sequences.
  • During start-up, a gradual change from a standstill to operating state is recommended:
    • Feed pressure should be increased gradually over a 30-60 second time frame.
    • Cross-flow velocity at set operating point should be achieved gradually over 15-20 seconds.
    • Permeate obtained from the first hour of operation should be discarded.
  • To prevent biological growth during prolonged system shutdowns, it is recommended that membrane elements be immersed in a preservative solution.
  • Avoid static permeate-side backpressure at all times.
  • The customer is fully responsible for the effects of incompatible chemicals and lubricants on elements.
