Summary

Product identification

DOW™ Specialty Membrane XUS120308 and XUS120304 are High Temperature Reverse Osmosis Elements featuring:

  • Continuous operating temperature capability up to 80°C due to special element and membrane design.
  • Robust DOW FILMTEC™ SW30 based reverse osmosis (RO) membrane sheet.
  • DOW HYPERSHELL™ Reverse Osmosis technology, a machined polypropylene rigid outer shell, offering:
    • Minimized channeling and control of premature element failures.
    • Improved hydrodynamics compared to mesh wrapped elements, potentially leading to energy savings and improved processing/Clean In Place (CIP) efficiency.
    • Improved safety and faster loading/unloading due to the rigid case which does not expand.
    • Easy and permanent identification via laser-etched model names and serial numbers.
  • A 48 mil parallel feed spacer which lessens the impact of fouling, reduces pressure drop, and enhances cleaning effectiveness.

These elements can reduce the size of cooling and heating systems, saving on both OPEX and CAPEX. Typical applications include:

  • Hot evaporator condensate reuse for process and rinsing.
  • Concentration of thin juice sugars or components in chemical processing.
  • Production of water for the pharmaceutical industry.

Mechanical / hydraulic

DOW HYPERSHELL™ Elements require approximately 30% less flow than mesh wrap for an equivalent pressure drop (at 4 psi delta P).

General Information

Start-Up New elements are normally cleaned prior to initial use. An alkaline wash with a wetting agent is recommended prior to initial use if formulated agents are not available. Avoid abrupt pressure or cross-flow variations on the spiral elements during start-up, shutdown, cleaning, or other sequences to prevent possible membrane damage. A gradual change from a standstill to operating state is recommended:

  • Feed pressure should be increased gradually over a 30-60 second timeframe.
  • Before initiating cross-flow at high permeate flux conditions, the set operating pressure should be maintained for 5-10 minutes.
  • Cross-flow velocity at the set operating point should be achieved gradually over 15-20 seconds.
  • Avoid permeate-side backpressure at all times.
  • Any concentrate or permeate obtained from the first hour of operation should be discarded.

Storage

  • Keep elements moist at all times after initial wetting.
  • During system shutdowns, it is recommended that elements be immersed in a preservative solution to control the spread of biological growth.

Regulatory Note These membranes may be subject to drinking water application restrictions in some countries; check application status before use and sale.
