Summary

Product identification

The FilmTec™ Seamaxx™-440i Element is a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) element featuring iLEC™ Interlocking Endcaps. It is a spiral-wound element with a polyamide thin-film composite membrane.

This product is designed for seawater systems operating at low to medium levels of salinity and temperature, and for brackish water with relatively high salinity. Key features include:

  • A 28-mil feed spacer, combining low differential pressure with low cleaning frequency and high cleaning efficiency.
  • iLEC™ Interlocking Endcaps to reduce system operating costs and O-ring leak risk.
  • An oxidative-free membrane manufacturing process, leading to high membrane robustness and long-term stable performance.
  • A wide pH range for cleanings (pH 1 – 13) for effective cleaning even with severe fouling.
  • Automated, precision fabrication, resulting in a greater number of shorter membrane leaves to reduce fouling and maximize element efficiency.

The FilmTec™ Seamaxx™-440i Elements are tested on flow and rejection performance using a standard test at 600 psi.

Typical Properties of Standard Test performed at 600 psi (4.1 MPa)

  • FilmTec™ Element: Seamaxx™-440i
  • Active Area: 440 ft² (41 m²)
  • Feed Spacer Thickness: 28 mil
  • Permeate Flowrate: 9,050 gpd (34.2 m³/d)
  • Stabilized Boron Rejection: 81.8%
  • Stabilized Salt Rejection: 99.47%

Test Conditions:

  • 32,000 ppm NaCl
  • 600 psi (4.1 MPa)
  • 77°F (25°C)
  • pH 8
  • 8% recovery

Notes:

  • Permeate flows for individual elements may vary ± 15%.
  • Minimum Salt Rejection is 99.25%.
  • Stabilized salt rejection is generally achieved within 24–48 hours of continuous use.
  • Specific boron stabilized rejection is based on test conditions including 5 ppm boron.
  • Active area is guaranteed ± 5%.

Expected Properties and Performance at Common Standard Test Conditions: 800 psi (5.5 MPa)

  • FilmTec™ Element: Seamaxx™-440i
  • Active Area: 440 ft² (41 m²)
  • Feed Spacer Thickness: 28 mil
  • Permeate Flowrate: 17,000 gpd (64.4 m³/d)
  • Stabilized Boron Rejection: 89%
  • Stabilized Salt Rejection: 99.70%

Normalization Conditions:

  • Values are normalized from the 600-psi specification standard test to the following conditions:
    • 32,000 ppm NaCl
    • 800 psi (5.5 MPa)
    • 77°F (25°C)
    • pH 8
    • 8% recovery
  • Elements are not tested at 800 psi due to their very high permeability, but at 600 psi to remain within operating guidelines.

Notes:

  • Permeate flows for individual elements may vary ± 15%.
  • Minimum Salt Rejection is 99.58%.
  • Specific boron stabilized rejection is based on normalization conditions including 5 ppm boron.

Mechanical / hydraulic

  • Element Dimensions – inches (mm)
    • A: 40.0 in (1,016 mm)
    • B: 40.5 in (1,029 mm)
    • C: 7.9 in (201 mm)
    • D: 1.125 in ID (29 mm ID)
  • Elements are designed to fit a nominal 8-inch (203-mm) I.D. pressure vessel.
  • Individual elements with iLEC™ Interlocking Endcaps measure 40.5 inches (1,029 mm) in length (B). The net length (A) of the elements when connected is 40.0 inches (1,016 mm).

Operating limits

  • Maximum Operating Pressure and Temperature:
    • 1,000 psig (69 bar) at T < 35°C
    • 900 psig (62 bar) at T = 35 – 45°C
  • Maximum Element Pressure Drop: 15 psig (1.0 bar)
  • pH Range:
    • Continuous Operation: 2 – 11
    • Short-term Cleaning (30 min): 1 – 13
  • Maximum Feed Silt Density Index (SDI): SDI 5
  • Free Chlorine Tolerance: < 0.1 ppm
  • The maximum temperature for continuous operation above pH 10 is 95°F (35°C). DuPont Water Solutions recommends removing residual free chlorine by pretreatment prior to membrane exposure, as oxidation damage is not covered under warranty.

Additional Important Information

  • The use of this product does not necessarily guarantee the removal of cysts and pathogens from water; effective reduction depends on complete system design, operation, and maintenance.
  • Permeate obtained from the first hour of operation should be discarded.
  • This product may be subject to drinking water application restrictions in some countries.
