Summary

Product identification

SPIRA-CEL® spiral wound modules utilize NADIR® membranes for microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration applications. These modules are designed with a compact form factor and offer an optimized surface-area-to-volume ratio. They are available in various constructions for different application areas including the process industry, biotechnological processes, food industry, and E-coat filtration.

NADIR® membranes, used in SPIRA-CEL® modules, are permanently hydrophilic and chemically resistant, available with cut-offs spanning microfiltration (e.g., 0.05 µm, 0.20 µm), ultrafiltration (e.g., 4 kDa to 500 kDa), and nanofiltration (e.g., 10% to 30% NaCl retention). They are produced from polymeric materials such as:

  • Polyethersulfone (PES)
  • Hydrophilic Polyethersulfone (PESH)
  • Polysulfone (PSUH)
  • Regenerated Cellulose (RC)
  • Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF)

Different SPIRA-CEL® module types are available:

  • DS-/PS-: Sanitary Modules for Food, Pharma, and Biotech Processes.
  • EY-/FY-: Non-Sanitary Modules for E-coat Filtration.
  • GY-/OY-/OX-: Non-Sanitary Modules for General Industrial Applications.

Operating limits

Operating conditions for SPIRA-CEL® modules vary by material group:

  • DS-/PS- (Sanitary):
    • Maximum operating temperature: 75 °C
    • Allowable pH-range in operation: 2 – 10
  • EY-/FY- (E-coat):
    • Maximum operating temperature: 50 °C
    • Allowable pH-range in operation: 2 – 11
  • GY- (Industrial GFK shell):
    • Maximum operating temperature: 80 °C
    • Allowable pH-range in operation: 2 – 11
  • OY- (Industrial hard shell):
    • Maximum operating temperature: 80 °C
    • Allowable pH-range in operation: 0 – 12
  • OX- (Industrial hard shell):
    • Maximum operating temperature: 80 °C
    • Allowable pH-range in operation: 3 – 14

NADIR® membrane material properties also indicate specific pH ranges and maximum temperatures:

  • Polyethersulfone (PES/PESH): pH-Range 0 - 14, Max. Temperature 95 °C (Polysulfone (PSUH) shares these properties).
  • Regenerated Cellulose (RC): pH-Range 1 - 11, Max. Temperature 55 °C.
  • Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF): pH-Range 2 - 11, Max. Temperature 95 °C.

Mechanical / hydraulic

  • Feed Channel Height: Can be varied by the thickness of the spacer material, ranging from 30 to 80 mil. A 44 mil Feed-Spacer is noted as most suitable for many applications.
  • Module Sizes: SPIRA-CEL® modules are available in various dimensions, typically represented as diameter x length, such as 2.4" x 40", 3.8" x 38", 4.0" x 40", 6.3" x 38", 7.6" x 40", 8.0" x 38", 8.0" x 40", and 8.3" x 38".
  • Membrane Area: The total membrane area varies significantly depending on the module size and feed-spacer thickness. For example, a 4040 module (4.0" x 40") can have areas ranging from 4.0 m² (80 mil spacer) to 7.6 m² (30 mil spacer).
  • Materials: SPIRA-CEL®-OX and SPIRA-CEL®-OY types are offered with polyethersulfone membranes. NADIR® membranes are available in Polyethersulfone (PES), Hydrophilic Polyethersulfone (PESH), Polysulfone (PSUH), Regenerated Cellulose (RC), and Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF).

See the official PDF for exact tabulated values for membrane areas across different module sizes and feed-spacer configurations.
