Operating limits

  • Permeate Pressure: Maximum allowed permeate pressure is 0.35 bar. The permeate outflow must always be unpressurized. Permeate pressure must never exceed feed side pressure.
  • Concentrate Pressure: The concentrate pressure at the downstream end must always exceed 0.7 bar during start-up.
  • Storage Temperature: 5 °C to 30 °C (never below 5 °C).
  • Storage Humidity: < 70%.
  • Module Operation:
    • Backflushing is not allowed and can cause deterioration.
    • Module must not be operated in dead-end mode.
    • Avoid water hammers, sudden changes in solid contents, strong decrease of flow rate, and temperature shocks.
    • Exceeding maximum pressure loss along the module can cause deterioration.

Feed water

Appropriate prefiltration is crucial for sustained high permeate fluxes. Data on appropriate prefiltration are given in the module data sheets.

Product water

During rinsing after installation, the concentrate and permeate produced are discarded. Additional cleaning after rinsing is recommended for applications with high purity demands.

Water Quality for Rinsing and Cleaning

Water used for rinsing and preparing cleaning or preservation solutions must be free of suspended particles (e.g., rust, algae, microbiological growth) and meet the following limit values for ingredients:

  • Turbidity: < 1 NTU
  • Particle size: < 10 µm
  • Iron and magnesium: < 0.3 mg/l
  • Silicon: < 10 mg/l
  • Aluminum: < 0.5 mg/l
  • Calcium: < 10 mg/l
  • Magnesium: < 0.2 mg/l
  • Hardness: < 300 mg/l (16 °dt)

Deionized water and reverse osmosis permeate generally satisfy these requirements.

Cleaning Strategies and Preservation

Recommended Cleaning Agents Specific cleaning agents (e.g., P3-ultrasil®, P3-Oxonia® from ECOLAB) are recommended based on application area and module type. Cleaning pH values range from strongly basic (e.g., pH 12.6-12.9) to slightly acidic (e.g., pH 5.1). Cleaning temperatures are typically 30-50°C. See the official PDF for exact tabulated values and compatibility with specific module/membrane types.

Membrane Preservation For downtime between 24 hours and several months, modules must be rinsed, cleaned, and preserved to protect against bacterial fouling. Recommended preservation solutions:

  • 1.0% sodium hydrogensulfite (NaHSO₃)
  • 0.5% formaldehyde (CH₂O) The preservation solution should be exchanged monthly.
