Cartridge Cleaning Guidelines:
- Clean cartridges when pressure differential is 12 psi above startup differential.
- Replace non-cleanable cartridges when pressure differential is 30 psi above start-up differential or when flow diminishes to an unacceptable level.
- Cleaning is generally not possible for petroleum-base liquids, toxic substances, and one micron and below applications.
- For oils: Soak in a solution of tri-sodium phosphate or similar strong detergent (2 lbs. to 10 gallons of water) for up to 12 hours.
- For organic matter, algae: Use tri-sodium phosphate solution plus 1 pint of liquid chlorine; soak one hour or longer.
- For calcium mineral deposits: Soak for approximately ten minutes in a solution of one part muriatic acid to twenty parts of water. Caution: Do not rinse cartridges with acid until oils and organic matter are removed.
Pressure Drop
The official PDF includes total head loss data developed by NSF International, showing pressure drop with Hurricane® Filters and one micron filter cartridges in clean water. These are presented as graphs plotting Total Head Loss (P.S.I.) against Flow Rate (GPM) for HUR 40 HP, HUR 90 HP, and HUR 170 HP models. See the official PDF for exact tabulated values and graphical representation.
Centrifugal Separation
Liquid enters the filter's outer chamber tangentially, creating a rotational flow and centrifugal force. This force separates dense particles (e.g., sand, rust, grit, metal fines), which drop to the bottom and can be discharged manually, automatically, or continuously. Lighter solids and liquid then rise into an inner chamber for further filtration.
