Summary

Product identification

Pall Stuttgarter Masse substrate is a micro-porous ceramic product in the form of crushed grains. It consists of more than 80% amorphic and crystalline silicic acids, with remaining amounts mainly composed of alumina and small amounts of alkali and earth alkali oxides. This substrate is sintered at high temperatures to form strong porous ceramic bodies.

Key characteristics:

  • High temperature and abrasion resistance.
  • Available in various grain sizes.
  • Colour: White.
  • High porosity and large surface area, easily immobilized by microorganisms.
  • Can be sterilized and thermally regenerated for residue-free removal of microorganisms.

Applications

Stuttgarter Masse substrate is suitable for a broad range of applications in chemical and biological process engineering, utilizing its adjusted pore size and large surface area.

  • Bulk Material: Fill for gravel bed filters for filtration and adsorption (e.g., water purification).
  • Carrier Material: Carrier for catalysts and indicators (e.g., gas detector devices).
  • Substrate: For the immobilization of microorganisms to increase biomass concentration (e.g., biological purification of wastewater and off-gases, production of chemical substances like alcohol and acetic acid).

Chemical Resistance

Stuttgarter Masse substrate is chemically neutral and inert.

  • Resistant against acids, saline solutions, and organic solvents (liquid or gaseous), even at elevated temperatures.
  • Resistant up to pH 9 in the alkaline range.
  • Does not resist hydrofluoric acid.
  • Note: As end-use conditions can vary, users are responsible for verifying compatibility with specific use conditions.

Operating limits

  • Max. temperature resistance: 500 °C

Mechanical / hydraulic

The ceramic substrate features high porosity and a large specific surface area.

  • Pore size of micropores: 0.1 – 1 µm
  • Pore size of macropores: 1 – 100 µm
  • Porosity: 45 %
  • Material density: 1.30 g/cm³
  • Bulk density: 0.70 g/cm³
  • Specific surface: 0.6 m²/g
