Summary

Product Identification

The DOW™ Ultrafiltration modules utilize high-strength, hollow PVDF polymeric fibers with a 0.03 µm nominal pore diameter. These modules are designed for outside-in flow configuration, offering high tolerance to feed solids and enabling air scour cleaning. The housing is made of U-PVC, eliminating the need for separate pressure vessels and providing UV light resistance.

The product line includes the following models:

  • SFX-2660
  • SFX-2860
  • SFX-2880

The hollow fiber membranes have a 1.3 mm outside diameter and 0.7 mm inside diameter.

Operating Limits

  • Feed Pressure, Maximum at Inlet at 20 ºC: 6.25 Bar (93.75 psi)
  • Operating Transmembrane Pressure (TMP) (Maximum): 2.1 Bar (30 psi)
  • Filtrate Flux @25C: 40 - 120 L/m²/hr (24 - 70 gfd)
  • Temperature (UPVC limited): 1 – 40 ºC (34 - 104 ºF)
  • Operating pH Range: 2 - 11
  • NaOCl, Cleaning Maximum: 2,000 ppm

Feed Water

DOW Ultrafiltration module designs are based on qualified feed water conditions, with tolerance for periodic excursions up to maximum allowable values. If feed water quality consistently falls outside the design basis, a pilot study or pretreatment may be required.

Qualified Feed Water Quality Parameters:

A safety screen of 150 – 300 microns is recommended for the feed to the UF system. Additional pretreatment technologies such as oxidation, coagulation, sedimentation, and media filtration may be recommended depending on the water source.

Product Water

The UF membranes are designed to reject solutes 0.03 microns and larger. They effectively remove particulate and microbial contaminants, including bacteria, viruses, and colloids. However, they do not remove ions or small molecules.

Module Connections

Each module has four connections: a side port on the bottom end cap for feed, a bottom air feed for air scouring, and top cap ports for concentrate (discharge from outside of fiber) and filtrate (inside of fiber).

Cleaning Processes

Backwash:

  • Frequency: Once every 20 to 60 minutes
  • Duration: 40 to 120 seconds
  • Flux: 100 to 150 L/m²∙h (60 - 90 gfd)

Air Scour:

  • Maximum Inlet Pressure: 2.5 bar (36 psi)
  • Air Flow per Module: 5 to 12 Nm³/h (3 - 7 scfm)
  • Duration: 20 to 60 seconds per cycle
  • Air-Water Mix Entrance Pressure: ≤ 1.0 bar (14 psi)
  • Air Quality: Non-oil compressed air

Chemically Enhanced Backwash (CEB):

  • Frequency: As needed
  • Duration: Backwash Time plus soak 5 to 20 minutes
  • Cleaning Solutions: 0.1% HCl, 2% Citric, 2% Oxalic; 0.1% NaOCl, 0.05% NaOH

Clean In Place (CIP):

  • Frequency: When TMP exceeds 1.0 bar above starting TMP (at same temperature)
  • Duration: 120 minutes (recycle and soak) or longer
  • Cleaning Solutions: 0.2% HCl, 2% Citric, 2% Oxalic; 0.1% NaOH + 0.2% NaOCl
  • Cleaning Flux per Module: 1.0 – 1.5 m³/h (6.6 - 8.8 gpm)
  • Temperature Range: 10 to 40 °C (34 - 104 ºF)

Integrity Testing

Two methods are commonly used:

  • Bubble Test: The drained module is pressurized with oil-free compressed air to a maximum of 2 bars (29 psi). Continuous air bubbles in the transparent filtrate tube indicate broken fibers.
  • Pressure Hold/Decay: The drained module is pressurized with oil-free compressed air to a maximum of 2 bars (29 psi). After closing the air inlet, the pressure is held for 10 minutes. A pressure drop lower than 0.2 bar (2.9 psi) indicates an integral membrane. A drop greater than 0.2 bar in 10 minutes suggests compromised fibers requiring repair.

Storage

Uninstalled Modules:

  • Modules are shipped wetted and stored in pH buffered 1% sodium metabisulphite solution.
  • Store horizontally with connections/ports facing up.
  • Stacking limit: four layers for 2660 and 2860 modules, three layers for 2880 modules.
  • Recommended ambient temperature: 20 to 35ºC.
  • Sealed modules can be stored up to 1 year in original packing under recommended conditions.
  • Preservative volumes: 2 liters for 2660, 4 liters for 2860, 6 liters for 2880.
  • For freezing conditions, glycerin can be added to the preservative (e.g., 20% glycerin provides a freezing point depression of 5.46 ºC).

Modules Installed on a Skid:

  • Modules must not be allowed to dry out, as dry membrane fibers will irreversibly lose flux.
  • For downtime greater than 48 hours, chemical preservative (1% NaHSO₃) addition is necessary.
  • For downtime greater than 7 days up to 90 days, preservative should be renewed every three months.
  • For downtime greater than 90 days, consult the manufacturer.
  • During long-term storage, the pH of the storage solution should be checked monthly and replaced if it falls below 3.
