Feed water

The following specifications regarding the feed water quality/composition have to be observed:

  • Water temperature: 4°C and 45°C (41°F and 113°F)
  • pH: 2 and 10
  • Turbidity: less than 300 NTU
  • Concentration of suspended solids: below 350 mg/l
  • The feed water does not contain any organic solvents.
  • Concentration of hydrocarbons: less than 1 mg/l.
  • No oxidizing substances exist in the feed water. The only exception is the back flush with free chlorine for the enhanced back flush (EBF).
  • Pre-filtration to the AQUADYN® modules should be ≤ 100 µm.

Mechanical / hydraulic

  • Recommended trans-membrane pressure (TMP): 0.2 to 0.6 bar (2.9 to 8.7 psi).
  • Flow velocity in the interconnections/manifolds between the modules: less than 2 m/s (6.6 ft/s).
  • Feed pump capacity: twice the permeate flux per module but less than 14.4 m³/h (63.4 gpm) at max. 1.2 bar (17.4 psi).
  • Back flush pump capacity: twice the permeate flux per module but less than 14.4 m³/h (63.4 gpm) at max. 1.2 bar (17.4 psi).
  • Installed blower for the air scouring: 3 to 10 Nm³/h (1.8 to 5.9 scfm) at maximal 1.2 bar (17.4 psi) per AQUADYN® UA1060 module.
  • Piping of the plant has to be dimensioned so that the modules can be operated without problems in a range of 0.2 to 1.2 bar (2.9 to 17.4 psi).
  • Velocity in the headers of permeate, feed and concentrate: less than 2 m/s (6.6 ft/s) at the maximum flow during forward flush and back flush.
  • Water hammers are strictly forbidden on both sides of the module.
  • It has to be ensured that the system can be completely de-aerated.
  • The design of the system should not allow for any dead zones on the permeate side.
  • It has to be ensured that during forward flush and back flush operation the concentrate can be completely flushed out of the AQUADYN® UA1060 modules.
  • Sufficient water volumes must be available for forward flush and back flush, considering flow rate and duration.
  • There is no permeate supply during the regeneration of the system.

Operating Cycles and Cleaning

  • Filtration cycles: 30 to 60 minutes in dead-end mode.
  • Air scouring: every 30 to 60 minutes for 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Forward flush: every 30 to 60 minutes for 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Back flush: every 30 to 60 minutes for 30 to 60 seconds at 1 to 1.2 bar (14.5 to 17.4 psi).
  • Enhanced back flush (EBF): every 3 to 10 days with less than 50 ppm free chlorine for 30 to 90 seconds with a soaking time of 5 to 20 minutes.
  • Complete drainage of all modules via feed manifold after each EBF is required.
  • Clean-in-place (CIP): every 20 to 90 days with ≤ 100 ppm free Chlorine, alkaline solutions with pH ≤ 10 or acid solutions at pH 2 to 3 for 2 to 4 hours depending on raw water quality.
  • The pH value of the water used for CIP with chlorine has to be adjusted to 6.8 – 7.
  • Maximum applicable free chlorine concentration for EBF and CIP cleaning is 100 ppm.
  • Tap water or permeate has to be used for CIP solution.
  • After EBF and CIP, residuals of chlorine might be present in the modules. A forward flush has to be performed to remove chlorine residuals from outside the membranes. A back flush or filtration to drain has to be performed if necessary to remove chlorine residuals from inside the membrane.

Recommended Data Measurements and Logging

  • Permeate flow (measured and recorded continuously).
  • Feed water temperature (measured and recorded continuously).
  • Turbidity of feed water (measured and recorded continuously).
  • pH of feed water (measured and recorded continuously).
  • Turbidity of permeate (measured and recorded continuously).
  • Forward flush and back flush flows (recorded daily and logged into an operations diary).
  • Inlet pressure and the transmembrane pressure of the modules during filtration and back flushing (measured continuously and data recorded).
  • Cleaning of the modules has to be documented in the operation diary, specifying cleaning times, temperature, chemicals used, concentration and amount of chemicals, the amount of rinsing solutions, as well as the duration of the cleaning cycle.
