Operating limits

  • Storage Temperature: 5 °C to 30 °C (for originally packed modules). Must never be stored below 5 °C.
  • Storage Humidity: < 70% (for originally packed modules).
  • Maximum Permeate Pressure: 0.35 bar (during start-up). Permeate outflow must always be unpressurized.
  • Concentrate Pressure (downstream end): Must always exceed 0.7 bar during start-up.
  • Maximum Operating Temperature:
    • PES/PS membranes: 95°C
    • RC membranes: 55°C
    • PVDF membranes: 95°C
  • pH Range:
    • PES membranes: 0 – 14
    • PS membranes: 1 – 14
    • RC membranes: 1 – 11
    • PVDF membranes: 2 – 11
  • Prohibited Operations:
    • Backflushing is not allowed.
    • Operation in dead-end mode is not allowed.
    • Water hammers, sudden jumps in solid content, strong decrease of flow rate, and temperature shocks are to be inhibited.
  • Maximum Pressure Loss: Refer to the module data sheet for specific values and temperature dependency. Exceeding this limit can deteriorate the module.

Feed water

  • Prefiltration: Essential for maintaining high permeate fluxes. Specific prefiltration data is provided in module data sheets.
  • Rinsing and Cleaning Water Quality: Water used for rinsing and preparing cleaning/preservation solutions must be free of suspended particles (especially rust, algae, and microbiological growth).
    • Limit values for water ingredients:
      • Turbidity: < 1 NTU
      • Particle size: < 10 µm
      • Iron and magnesium: < 0.3 mg/l
      • Silicon: < 10 mg/l
      • Aluminium: < 0.5 mg/l
      • Calcium: < 10 mg/l
      • Magnesium: < 0.2 mg/l
      • Hardness: < 300 mg/l (16 °dt)
  • Recommended Water Source: Deionized water or permeate from a reverse osmosis plant. Condensate is not generally recommended due to potential contamination.

Product water

  • The permeate outflow must always be unpressurized.
  • The permeate pressure must never exceed the feed side pressure.

Mechanical / hydraulic

  • Module Dimensions (Outer Diameter x Length including ATDs):
    • Type 2440 (2.4″ x 40″):
      • Outer Diameter: 62.0 +0.0/-2.0 mm
      • Length: 965 ± 1.5 mm
      • Permeate Tube Outer Diameter: 19.05 +0.1/-0.0 mm
      • Note: 2440 modules are only available with 44 mil spacer.
    • Type 4040 (4″ x 40″):
      • Outer Diameter: 101.5 +0.0/-2.0 mm
      • Length: 1016 +1.0/-3.0 mm
      • Permeate Tube Inner Diameter: 16 ± 0.1 mm
    • Type 8040 (8″ x 40″):
      • Outer Diameter: 200.5 +0.0/-2.0 mm
      • Length: 1016 ± +1.0/-3.0 mm
      • Permeate Tube Inner Diameter: 30.15 ± 0.1 mm
  • Materials: ATDs and permeate tubes are made of polysulfone.
  • Standard Scope of Delivery: Includes 2 plastic ATDs (connected to the module) and 1 seal per module.
  • Auxiliary Equipment (Not Included): Interconnectors, pressure vessels with permeate and blank adaptors must be ordered separately.

Cleaning and Preservation

  • Membrane Preservation (for downtime > 24 hours): After rinsing and cleaning, modules must be preserved to protect against bacterial fouling.
    • Preservation Solutions:
      • 1.0 % sodium hydrogensulfite (NaHSO₃)
      • 0.5% formaldehyde (CH₂O)
    • Preservation solution should be exchanged every month. Modules must always be kept wet; drying leads to irreversible damage.
  • Cleaning Process Parameters:
    • Pressure at feed inlet: 1.5 - 2.0 bar
    • Pressure at concentrate outlet: 0.7 - 0.9 bar
    • Permeate must be extracted at zero pressure; outlets must remain open.
    • Cleaning is carried out with high flow rates and low transmembrane pressure.
    • Warm cleaning agents (30 – 50 °C) are more effective, but temperature must not exceed the maximum operation temperature.
  • Recommended Cleaning Strategies: The document provides a table of recommended cleaning agents (P3-ultrasil® and P3-Oxonia® products from ECOLAB) with specific pH values and temperatures for various application areas and module types. See the official PDF for exact tabulated values and specific recommendations/restrictions for each module type.
